Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.27.24
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
tumburu-nārada-ādayaḥ
—
Tumburu, Nārada and the rest
Compound list: Tumburu (chief gandharva) + Nārada (the singer-sage) + ādi (etc.). The Bhāgavatam names the chief musicians of the upper realms — and they come to sing not for Indra now, but for Indra's Lord.
-
yaśaḥ-loka-mala-apaham
—
(His) glories which eradicate the contamination of the worlds
Compound: loka (world) + mala (impurity) + apa-ha (remover). The Bhāgavatic doctrine: hari-kīrtana itself purifies — śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ (SB 7.5.23). Gauḍīyas treat this clause as one of the verses that grounds nāma-rūpa-kīrtana as the yuga-dharma.
-
hareḥ
—
of Lord Hari
Genitive of Hari. The Bhāgavatam shifts names — Kṛṣṇa, Govinda, Hari — at the moment of his coronation. Each name a facet; Hari is the name that names His function of removing (√hṛ) sin and anguish.
-
sura-aṅganāḥ-sannanṛtuḥ
—
the wives of the demigods danced together
Compound: sura (demigod) + aṅganā (wife) + sam-√nṛt (to dance together). The same demigods' wives who watched Indra rule heaven now dance for the cowherd. The Bhāgavatam's gentle joke about whom the wives recognize as their real Indra.
-
mudā anvitāḥ
—
filled with joy
Instrumental mud (joy) + past participle anvita (accompanied by). The joy is named explicitly — ānanda, not duty. Bhakti's signature: even the celestial elites are not performing rites; they are happy.
Then a festival giving joy to the universe took place. That is described in three verses. They came to Śakra-kuṇḍa (Indra-kuṇḍa) according to Varāha Purāṇa or Govinda-kuṇḍa according to Skanda Purāṇa, famous places near Govardhana. The reason was that they were filled with joy, and not because of being ordered by Indra. Tumburu is mentioned before Nārada because he was superior in singing. That is explained in Liṅga Purāṇa. Nārada is an eternal associate of the Lord and the best among the associates of the Lord’s avatāras, among the associates such as Garuḍa. He was present there along with Garuḍa and others among the Gandharvas because of the festival of singing. The word ādayaḥ indicates that Citraratha and others were also there. Or tumburu-nāradādayaḥ can mean Tumburu and Nārada headed the Gandharvas. The glory of Kṛṣṇa removed all faults in bhakti (mala) up to the desire for liberation.
- What 'role in the festival' have I been declining because I felt unqualified?
- Where could I sing or dance without waiting for the lead role?
When a wedding is sealed in a village, the musicians come from the next village over, and the women dance in the courtyard. Tumburu, Nārada, gandharvas and apsarās arrive at Vraja's abhiṣeka the same way — heaven empties out to celebrate what Vraja already knew. The cosmos catches up to the cowherds.
Nārada Muni, who has narrated Kṛṣṇa's glories across so many cantos and śāstras, here appears not as orator but as singer. The same sage who taught Vyāsa to write the Bhāgavatam (SB 1.5) is one of the chorus at Govinda's coronation.
Gauḍīyas note that the line from Nārada — through Vyāsa, Śuka, the Six Gosvāmīs, Caitanya — begins, in a sense, at this scene. The first kīrtaneer of the Lord's Vraja-glory is at the abhiṣeka, learning the name 'Govinda' from Indra's own mouth.
