  • suhṛdaḥ — friends
Plural of suhṛd — well-wisher, friend. Sakhya-rasa noun. The cowherd boys are addressed (and address themselves) by this exact technical noun — Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu uses suhṛd for the friendship-mood between equals.
  • su-āgatam — welcome
Compound: su (well) + āgata (come). The greeting svāgatam. The boys' first word — protocol of welcome, but in the affection of friends. Aiśvarya entirely absent; this is how friends greet each other returning from a brief errand.
  • ati-raṁhasā — very quickly
Compound: ati (very) + raṁhas (speed). The boys' perception: He came back quickly. From their side, no year passed; only a moment. The temporal compression of verse 43 in their own voice.
  • abhoji kavalaḥ — (not even) a morsel was eaten
Phrase: a-bhoji (not eaten) + kavala (morsel, mouthful). Same word as verse 1's kavala (Kṛṣṇa with a morsel in His hand). The morsel that hung in His hand for a year now resumes the meal.
  • ehi — come
Imperative of √i — to come. Two-syllable command from boys to Bhagavān. The Gauḍīya vinaya note: in sakhya-rasa even imperative is sweet — the friend who can be ordered is the dearer friend.
The cowherd boyfriends said to Lord Kṛṣṇa: You have returned so quickly! We have not eaten even one morsel in Your absence. Please come here and take Your meal without distraction.

The words sv-āgataṁ te ’ti-raṁhasā indicate that the cowherd boys were congratulating Lord Kṛṣṇa for having brought the calves back so quickly from the forest. Now Lord Kṛṣṇa’s beloved friends urged Him to sit down properly and eat to His full satisfaction. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the cowherd boyfriends felt quite jubilant and were eager to eat with their dear friend, Kṛṣṇa.

Translation
The cowherd boyfriends said to Lord Kṛṣṇa: You have returned so quickly! We have not eaten even one morsel in Your absence. Please come here and take Your meal without distraction.
Commentary

The cowherd boys spoke to Krsna who had very quickly returned with happiness (svagatam). "We thought you would take at least one ghatika to bring the calves back from so far away but you have bought them in an instant. Without you we have not eaten a morsel. Therefore please come here."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

You have come nicely (svāgatam), bringing all the calves. Though a year had passed, they remained with the food in their hands by the power of Kṛṣṇa’s icchā-śakti. Or, you have not eaten a particle of food. You are holding the same food in your hand as before. Enter here (itaḥ) among us. Looking for the calves and bringing them together, or giving up anxiety which arose from that venture, eat heartily (sādhu).

Related verses
The boys, not noticing the missing year, call Kṛṣṇa back so they can eat together. Friendship with the Lord is direct and uncomplicated — He left, He returned, now let's share lunch.
Reflection Questions
  • Where have I overcomplicated my approach to Kṛṣṇa with formality?
  • What would 'just eat with Him' look like in my devotional practice this week?

Friends who have agreed to eat together do not eat without each other; if one is delayed even briefly, the food is set aside, the bench is kept. The cowherd boys, untouched by hunger because Kṛṣṇa was away, simply say — 'you're back! come, eat, no one of us has eaten a morsel.' Sakhya-rasa with the kitchen still warm.
