  • puṁsā — by the Supreme Personality of Godhead
Instrumental of puṁs, 'the Person.' Throughout this passage the Lord is named as Person, not principle. Bhagavān's foreknowledge is a personal act — He knows because He sees, not because of a structural omniscience.
  • avadhṛtaḥ — was certainly known
Past participle of ava-dhṛ, 'to ascertain, determine.' The verse establishes timing — the knowing preceded the asking. Prayer in Gauḍīya is therefore never information-delivery; it is the devotee's participation in what is already underway.
  • aṁśaiḥ — expanding as plenary portions
Instrumental plural of aṁśa. The demigods will descend not in their full personal form but as aṁśas. The verse models a principle: even servants of Bhagavān take partial expansions when entering the līlā. Multiplicity of presence is normal in Vaikuṇṭha-tattva.
  • īśvara-īśvaraḥ — the Lord of lords
The lords' lord — Bhagavān as supreme even over the īśvaras (controllers) like Brahmā, Śiva, Indra. The compound rules out any hierarchy in which the Person could be balanced against other 'gods' — the demigods themselves are subordinate.
  • sva-kāla-śaktyā — by His own potency the time factor
Sva (own) + kāla (time) + śakti (potency). Time is not external to Bhagavān; it is His śakti. Therefore He 'moves on earth diminishing burden by His own time-energy' — the same kāla that frightens the conditioned soul is His instrument in His hand.
Lord Brahmā informed the demigods: Before we submitted our petition to the Lord, He was already aware of the distress on earth. Consequently, for as long as the Lord moves on earth to diminish its burden by His own potency in the form of time, all of you demigods should appear through plenary portions as sons and grandsons in the family of the Yadus.

As stated in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.39) : rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu kṛṣṇaḥ svayaṁ samabhavat paramaḥ pumān yo govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi “I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, who is always situated in various incarnations such as Rāma, Nṛsiṁha and many sub-incarnations as well, but who is the original Personality of Godhead, known as Kṛṣṇa, and who incarnates personally also.” In this verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam we find the words puraiva puṁsāvadhṛto dharā-jvaraḥ. The word puṁsā refers to Kṛṣṇa, who was already aware of how the whole world was suffering because of the increase of demons. Without reference to the supreme power of the Personality of Godhead, demons assert themselves to be independent kings and presidents, and thus they create a disturbance by increasing their military power. When such disturbances are very prominent, Kṛṣṇa appears. At present also, various demoniac states all over the world are increasing their military power in many ways, and the whole situation has become distressful. Therefore Kṛṣṇa has appeared by His name, in the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, which will certainly diminish the burden of the world. Philosophers, religionists, and people in general must take to this movement very seriously, for man-made plans and devices will not help bring peace on earth. The transcendental sound Hare Kṛṣṇa is not different from the person Kṛṣṇa. nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto ’bhinnatvān nāma-nāminoḥ ( Padma Purāṇa ) There is no difference between the sound Hare Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa the person.

Translation
Lord Brahmā informed the demigods: Before we submitted our petition to the Lord, He was already aware of the distress on earth. Consequently, for as long as the Lord moves on earth to diminish its burden by His own potency in the form of time, all of you demigods should appear through plenary portions as sons and grandsons in the family of the Yadus.
Commentary

Braham repeats the words of Visnu in four verses. Pumsa here means bhagavan Krsna, because Srimad Bhagavatam describes Krsna as the person who would appear to relieve the problems of the earth: krsnah svayam samabhavat paramah puman ya (Krsna himself who is the supreme being (puman) appeared.) The sufferings of the earth have been understtond (avadhrtah) already by Krsna (pumsa). The devas should appear along with to the Lord’s associates such as Uddhava and Satyaki who are expansions of the Lord (amsaih) in the family of Yadu (Kurus, or more specifically the Pandavas). Isvaresvara indicates that Krsna is the Lord of all of lords (isvaras) including Visnu.

Commentary

Brahmā repeated Viṣṇu’s words in four verses. Kṛṣṇa (puṁsā), of whom I (Viṣṇu) am a portion of a portion, has already understood the distressful condition of the earth. You do not have to inform him. I (Viṣṇu) also know. Therefore I did not become visible personally to hear about it at this time. You should be born along with the unlimited portions of Kṛṣṇa. The portions are the Yādavas: ete hi yādavāḥ sarve mad gaṇā eva bhāmini sarvadā mat priyā devi mat tūlya-guṇa-śālinaḥ O goddess! All the Yādavas are my people, most dear to me and equal to me in qualities. Padma Purāṇa, Kartika-māhātmya You should be born as sons and grandsons of the Yādavas, who are eternal associates of the Lord and remain near them. Yadāvas also includes their relatives the Pāṇḍavas. It should be understood that the Pāṇḍavas attained Svarga (in Mahābhārata), but being qualified as eternal associates, actually went to the Lord. Kṛṣṇa is the lord of all of us, the lord of the universal form and antaryāmī. īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ anādir ādir govindaḥ sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam || Kṛṣṇa is the supreme controller. He is the enjoyer of innumerable consorts, and the possessor of an eternal form of knowledge and bliss. Though, he is without origin, he is the source of all other forms of God, and is the cause of all causes. He is Govinda, the boy who cares for the cows. Brahma-saṁhitā 1 yasyaika-niśvasita-kālam athāvalambya jīvanti loma-vilajā jagad-aṇḍa-nāthāḥ | viṣṇur mahān sa iha yasya kalā-viśeṣo govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi || I worship the Supreme Lord Govinda whose first expansion is Mahā-viṣṇu, who determines the appearance and disappearance of the rulers within the universe (even Kṣirodakaśāyī-viṣṇu) by his exhalation and inhalation of breath. Brahma-saṁhitā 48 athāham aṁśa-bhāgena devakyāḥ putratāṁ śubhe prāpsyāmi tvaṁ yaśodāyāṁ nanda-patnyāṁ bhaviṣyasi O all-auspicious Yogamāyā, I shall then appear with my Viṣṇu expansions as the son of Devakī, and you will appear as the daughter of mother Yaśodā, the queen of Mahārāja Nanda. SB 10.2.9 nārāyaṇas tvaṁ na hi sarva-dehinām ātmāsy adhīśākhila-loka-sākṣī nārāyaṇo ’ṅgaṁ nara-bhū-jalāyanāt tac cāpi satyaṁ na tavaiva māyā Are you not the original Nārāyaṇa, O supreme controller, since you are the soul of every embodied being and the eternal witness of all created realms? Indeed, Lord Nārāyaṇa is your expansion, and he is called Nārāyaṇa because he is the generating source of the primeval water of the universe. He is real, not a product of your illusory Māyā. SB 10.14.14 yasyāṁśāṁśāṁśa-bhāgena viśvotpatti-layodayāḥ bhavanti kila viśvātmaṁs taṁ tvādyāhaṁ gatiṁ gatā O Soul of all that be, the creation, maintenance and destruction of the universe are all carried out by a fraction of an expansion of an expansion of your expansion. Today I have come to take shelter of you, the Supreme Lord. SB 10.85.31 Though I can to this immediately, when my time energy is engaged to do it, it will take place. It will happen in due time. The word sva (my own) in the phrase sva-kāla-śaktyā is used to indicate that time is also subservient to Kṛṣṇa. You should remain on earth as long as Kṛṣṇa remains visible (as long as he moves on earth). Other than this, he is also eternally performing pastimes in his unmanifest form in Vṛndāvana along with his eternal associates, but he is invisible to others. vatsair vatsatarībhiś ca sākaṁ krīḍati mādhavaḥ | vṛndāvanāntaragataḥ sarāmo bālakair vṛtaḥ || Kṛṣṇa plays with the calves and older calves within Vṛndāvana, surrounded by Balarāma and other boys. Skanda Purāṇa rājadhānī tataḥ sābhūt sarva-yādava-bhūbhujām mathurā bhagavān yatra nityaṁ sannihito hariḥ Since that time, the city of Mathurā had been the capital of all the kings of the Yadu dynasty. The city and district of Mathurā are very intimately connected with Kṛṣṇa, for Kṛṣṇa lives there eternally.

Related verses
Kṛṣṇa already knows the world's burden — He descends in His own time, and our part is to align as His instruments, not to manage outcomes alone.
Practical Applications
  • Chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra audibly today, trusting the holy name is non-different from Kṛṣṇa Himself.
  • Notice one news-driven anxiety about the world's chaos and consciously hand it back to the īśvareśvara whose kāla-śakti is already at work.
  • Refuse the modern fantasy that man-made plans alone will fix the world — act in your sva-dharma today as a small aṁśa serving His descent.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my life am I assuming Kṛṣṇa is unaware of a burden I am carrying — and what changes the moment I accept that He already knows, before I petition?
  • What 'demoniac' assertion of independence — in my work, my plans, my self-image — am I quietly building, that I would rather diminish myself than have Kṛṣṇa's kāla-śakti diminish for me?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When a campus or online cause demands you make it your whole identity, remember the Yadu pattern — you can serve a movement as a plenary portion without becoming its protagonist. This week, contribute to one cause without posting about it; let Kṛṣṇa, not the algorithm, be the witness.
  • Notice the urge to 'fix' a struggling friend by managing their feelings, their grades, their relationship. That is material compassion. Real compassion in this verse is bringing them, even once, into the sound of the holy name — share a kīrtan, a verse, a class invite, instead of another pep talk.
  • Before your next exam or interview, pause for sixty seconds and remember puraiva puṁsāvadhṛto — Kṛṣṇa already knows the situation. Your job is sva-dharma effort, not outcome-engineering. Then walk in and work hard.
householder
  • When the household feels like a burden you alone are carrying — finances, kids' schooling, aging parents — recall that you are a plenary portion in your family's role, not the īśvara of it. Each evening, formally hand the day's unsolved problems to Kṛṣṇa before sleep; pick them up again tomorrow without the false weight of sole proprietorship.
  • In family decisions about money, schools, or career moves, distinguish material compassion (maximizing bodily comfort for the children) from real compassion (giving them sādhana, association, and the holy name). Make at least one decision this month where Kṛṣṇa-conscious upbringing outranks the optimized résumé.
  • Treat your home as a small Yadu-kula — a household whose function is to host Kṛṣṇa, not just to host its members' careers. Establish or strengthen one daily practice the whole family does together: a verse, a chant, prasāda offered before eating.
senior
  • The dharā-jvara of this age is not yours to cure single-handedly, and at this stage that truth is a relief, not a defeat. Identify one project or worry you have been carrying out of habit and consciously hand it to a younger person — or to Kṛṣṇa — this week.
  • Mentor with the Yadu posture: your role is to prepare plenary portions, not to leave a personal monument. In your conversations with children, grandchildren, and students, speak more of Kṛṣṇa and less of your own accomplishments; let your legacy be their connection to the holy name, not their memory of you.
  • Use the loosening of bodily strength as built-in vairāgya. Each time the body says no to something it once did easily, take it as Kṛṣṇa's sva-kāla-śakti gently diminishing your burden — and increase your chanting by the time freed up.
Common Pitfalls
  • Treating Kṛṣṇa's awareness of the earth's distress as a reason for passivity — 'He already knows, so I don't have to act' — instead of recognizing that the demigods were still instructed to take birth and serve as aṁśas.
  • Reading 'kāla-śaktyā kṣapayan' as impersonal cosmic time or karmic mechanism, drifting into an impersonalist frame, when the verse explicitly names Kṛṣṇa as īśvareśvara wielding time as His own potency.
  • Romanticizing the avatāra as a distant historical rescue while ignoring Prabhupāda's purport that the same Kṛṣṇa has appeared now as the Hare Kṛṣṇa name — and so failing to take up nāma-sādhana as the concrete, present-day participation in this very pastime.
Discussion Prompts
  • Prabhupāda says man-made plans and devices will not bring peace on earth. Pair up and name one specific 'plan' you currently trust to fix the world (political, economic, technological, therapeutic). Where does that trust quietly compete with trust in Kṛṣṇa as īśvareśvaraḥ? Push each other — don't let your partner stop at a pious answer.
  • Brahmā tells the demigods to incarnate as plenary portions in the Yadu family — they get drafted into Kṛṣṇa's mission, not their own. Discuss with your group: when has a 'mission' you wanted to lead been replaced by a smaller supporting role someone else assigned you? Did you treat that as demotion or as service? Where do you still resist being a portion rather than the protagonist?
  • The verse says Kṛṣṇa was already aware of the dharā-jvara before any petition was offered. If He already knows, why pray, why petition, why chant at all? Argue both sides honestly in your pair before settling — and notice if your 'settled' answer is just a slogan you inherited.
Role Play

A teacher splits the class into two roles. One student plays a well-meaning activist who has just returned from a climate march, exhausted, convinced that organizing harder is the only real response to the world's burden. The other student plays a Yadu-family member in this verse — someone explicitly told they are being placed on earth as a plenary portion to assist Kṛṣṇa's own descent, not to run their own rescue operation. The activist tries to recruit the Yadu into the cause. The Yadu must respond without dismissing the suffering, without impersonalist platitudes, and without claiming personal heroism — distinguishing real compassion (serving the soul, joining Kṛṣṇa's movement, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa as Prabhupāda recommends in the purport) from material compassion (treating bodily relief as the final goal). After five minutes, swap roles. Then debrief: where did the Yadu sound preachy? Where did the activist's argument land genuinely?

Objections & Responses
  • This is just divine outsourcing. 'Kṛṣṇa already knows, Kṛṣṇa will handle it' is exactly the passivity that lets injustice continue. The world's burden gets heavier while devotees chant.
Read the verse carefully — Kṛṣṇa's awareness does not cancel the demigods' assignment; it shapes it. They are explicitly told to take birth, act, and labor in the Yadu family. Awareness above, action below. The Gauḍīya answer is not passivity but re-located activity: chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, as Prabhupāda says in this very purport, is the actual diminishing of the world's burden, because the burden is finally a burden of forgetfulness, not of logistics. We still feed, still teach, still resist demonic power — but we stop pretending our plans are the prime mover. Sva-kāla-śaktyā — His own time-potency — is the engine. We are limbs.
  • Calling rival nations and their militaries 'demons' is just religious chauvinism dressed up. Every side calls the other side demons. Why should I take Prabhupāda's geopolitical commentary seriously?
Prabhupāda's category of asura is not ethnic or national — it is defined precisely in BG 16.1 onward, which is in our related-verses list: those who reject the supremacy of the Personality of Godhead and assert independent proprietorship. By that definition, demoniac tendency cuts through every nation, including our own, including ourselves on the days we forget. The verse is not a license to label foreign powers; it is a mirror. Where in my own life do I 'assert myself as independent king and president,' to use Prabhupāda's phrase? That is the asura the chanting actually addresses first. Geopolitics is downstream of that ahaṅkāra.

Bhagavān knew the earth's distress before anyone reported it — like a father who notices his daughter's silence before she names her sorrow. The verse releases the demigods from the proud illusion that their petition initiated the rescue. Their job is not to inform Him but to participate; they will appear as Kṛṣṇa's sons and grandsons because the cosmic drama needs cast, not because the Director needs reminding.
