Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.1.17
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
bhūmiḥ
—
mother earth
Bhūmi is feminine, addressed as mother. In Vaiṣṇava theology she is the consort of Viṣṇu in His Varāha-līlā — Bhū-devī. Her distress is therefore not merely environmental; it is the consort's appeal to the Lord, mediated through Brahmā.
-
dṛpta
—
puffed up
Past participle of dṛp, 'to be intoxicated, swell.' The defining mark of the demoniac is dṛpta-bhāva — intoxicated self-inflation. The Bhāgavata diagnoses cosmic crisis as a consciousness disorder, not an economic or political one.
-
nṛpa-vyāja
—
posing as kings
Nṛpa (king) + vyāja (pretext, disguise). The dangerous demons here are not openly demoniac — they wear the king's crown. The Bhāgavata's social diagnosis: in Kali-yuga, the demonic enters via the legitimate office, not despite it.
-
śaraṇam
—
to take shelter
The same word the Pāṇḍavas' family used in 5–7. Earth herself takes śaraṇa of Brahmā, who in turn will take śaraṇa of Viṣṇu. The verse establishes that even demigods practice śaraṇāgati — the principle is universal.
When the world is overburdened by unnecessary military arrangements and when various demoniac kings are the executive heads of state, this burden causes the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (4.7) : yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham “Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion — at that time I appear Myself.” When the residents of this earth become atheistic and godless, they descend to the status of animals like dogs and hogs, and thus their only business is to bark among themselves. This is dharmasya glāni, deviation from the goal of life. Human life is meant for attaining the highest perfection of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, but when people are godless and the presidents or kings are unnecessarily puffed up with military power, their business is to fight and increase the military strength of their different states. Nowadays, therefore, it appears that every state is busy manufacturing atomic weapons to prepare for a third world war. Such preparations are certainly unnecessary; they reflect the false pride of the heads of state. The real business of a chief executive is to see to the happiness of the mass of people by training them in Kṛṣṇa consciousness in different divisions of life. Cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ ( Bg. 4.13 ). A leader should train the people as brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras and engage them in various occupational duties, thus helping them progress toward Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Instead, however, rogues and thieves in the guise of protectors arrange for a voting system, and in the name of democracy they come to power by hook or crook and exploit the citizens. Even long, long ago, asuras, persons devoid of God consciousness, became the heads of state, and now this is happening again. The various states of the world are preoccupied with arranging for military strength. Sometimes they spend sixty-five percent of the government’s revenue for this purpose. But why should people’s hard-earned money be spent in this way? Because of the present world situation, Kṛṣṇa has descended in the form of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. This is quite natural, for without the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement the world cannot be peaceful and happy.
"Now hear the famous reason for the Lord’s appearance." With this suggestion, the verse is spoken. Afflicted by the burden of sin of countless soldiers of the daityas, who, though not born of Diti’s lineage, attained their demonic status by their actions, the earth personified approached Brahma situated on the peak of Mount Meru. (This was not the Brahma on Satyaloka.). In the Satya yuga before the appearance of Krsna, King Raivata went to Brahma on Satyaloka along with his daughter Revati, to ask about his daughter’s marriage. In Brahma’s assembly the gandharvas Haha and Huhu were singing. During the length of one song on Brahma loka, Satya and Treta yuga on earth finished, and Dvapara yuga also passed. Krsna and Balarama were about to appear. Brahma said, "Please give your daughter in marriage to Balarama, who has now appeared on the earth planet. He is a suitable groom." Thus, situated on Satya loka, Hiranyagarbha Brahma was listening to the song while satya, treat and dvapara yuga on earth planet passed until Krsna and Balarama’s appearance. The deity of the earth could not have approached that Brahma to make her request. Earth personified instead went to Vairaja Brahma living on Mount Meru. Parasara confirms this : jagama dharini meroh samaje tridivaukasam: The Earth went along with the devas to Mount Meru."
The well-known reason for the appearance of the Lord is described in this verse. By mentioning the demons’ pride (dṛpta), Śukadeva indicates their nature of disrespecting the saintly because of their lack of proper discrimination. The demons had unlimited (śatāyutaiḥ) armies. The earth took shelter of Brahmā.

- Notice today where you yourself rule a small domain (work, family, screen) with the puffed-up ahaṅkāra of a 'dṛpta-nṛpa' and step down from that throne.
- Refuse to add to the bhūri-bhāra: cut one purchase, opinion, or fight today that exists only to inflate your false position.
- Speak Kṛṣṇa's names aloud at least once today as your concrete contribution to lightening the earth's load through saṅkīrtana.
- Where in my own life am I, like the demoniac kings of this verse, accumulating 'military phalanxes' — wealth, credentials, defenses, certainties — that burden others and the earth itself rather than serving Kṛṣṇa?
- When I see leaders 'puffed up with power,' do I treat that as someone else's problem, or do I recognize the same dṛpta (conceit) operating in miniature within my own household, work, or speech today?
- Audit one feed today — Instagram, YouTube, X, TikTok — and identify three dṛpta-nṛpa-vyāja figures: people 'dressed as kings' (founders, influencers, hot takes) whose confidence you have mistaken for dharma. Mute or unfollow at least one before you sleep.
- In your friend group or classroom, notice the next time a discussion becomes a contest of military strength — louder voices, sharper put-downs, who 'won' the argument. Step out of that economy for the rest of the conversation; speak only what serves the soul of the person across from you, not your standing.
- When the next exam or placement season makes you feel that your worth depends on out-competing your peers, remember bhūri-bhāra — the unbearable burden the earth carries when everyone is scrambling for dominance. Choose one rival you have been quietly tracking, and pray for their success by name in your morning sādhana for a week.
- Look at your family budget the way Prabhupāda looks at the national budget. What percentage is going to 'military' — status purchases, defensive insurance against neighbors' opinions, fortifications against imagined futures — versus actual training of your children in Kṛṣṇa consciousness? Move one line item this month.
- When you vote, hire, or choose a school, stop asking only 'who will protect my interests?' and start asking 'who is training people in their sva-dharma as brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra qualities?' You will rarely find a perfect option — choose the less demoniac one without illusion, and do not outsource your children's training to them.
- Mother earth went to Brahmā because she could not carry the burden alone. Identify the one burden in your household — a debt, a conflict, an aging parent, a child's struggle — that you have been carrying in private pride. This week, formally bring it to your guru, a senior devotee, or your spouse in prayer, and ask for shelter the way bhūmi did.
- You have watched several 'demoniac kings' rise and fall in your lifetime — leaders, bosses, gurus-gone-wrong. Sit with one younger person this week and tell them, without bitterness, the specific tell-tale signs of dṛpta-nṛpa-vyāja you learned to recognize. That is karuṇā as transmission.
- Examine what you are leaving behind — property, businesses, even spiritual institutions you helped build. Are these structures that will train descendants in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or are they 'military arrangements' your heirs will fight over? Restructure one thing now while you still can, with vairāgya, not panic.
- As the body's 'military' weakens — strength, memory, reputation — practice samatā by greeting each loss as relief from a burden mother earth herself wanted lifted. Each evening, name one thing the day stripped from you and offer thanks for the lightening, then chant your rounds with that lightness.
- Reading this verse as political commentary about 'those bad leaders out there' while ignoring the asuric impulses — false pride, exploitation, performative protection — in one's own conduct.
- Misreading mother earth's appeal to Brahmā as license for passive waiting ('Kṛṣṇa will descend and fix it') instead of recognizing one's duty to actively spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness as the verse's purport explicitly directs.
- Confusing material compassion for the earth's ecological burden with the real burden Prabhupāda names — godlessness and dharmasya glāni — and thus pursuing activism divorced from bhakti.
- Prabhupāda says rogues and thieves come to power 'by hook or crook' through democracy. Where in your own civic life do you participate in propping up that very system — voting, paying taxes, consuming media — and where would a real Vaiṣṇava draw the line? Disagree honestly with each other.
- Bhūmi did not approach Kṛṣṇa directly; she went to Brahmā, who went to Viṣṇu. Discuss whether you actually trust the paramparā chain in your own life, or whether you secretly want to skip the guru and 'go straight to Kṛṣṇa.' What does that impulse reveal?
- The verse calls these kings dṛpta-nṛpa-vyāja — demons 'dressed like kings.' Name a contemporary figure (politician, CEO, influencer, even a guru) you currently admire, and have your partner press you on whether your admiration is for genuine dharma or for the costume. Switch and do it back.
You are a small group of devotees on a college campus. A classmate — sincere, intelligent, slightly hostile — sits down and says: 'Your scripture says demonic kings overburden the earth and Kṛṣṇa descends to kill them. That's just ancient propaganda for holy war. How is this any different from every other religion that says God is on our side and our enemies are demons?' One student plays the classmate and pushes hard. Two students respond — one trying to defend the verse with logic, the other trying to lead with bhakti and Prabhupāda's actual point (that the issue is dharmasya glāni inside us, and that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, not war, is Kṛṣṇa's present descent). After ten minutes, debrief: which approach actually moved the classmate, and which one was just the devotees defending their tribe?
- This purport is just Prabhupāda's 1970s Cold War politics dressed up as scripture. Atomic weapons, sixty-five percent military budgets, attacks on democracy — none of that is in the Sanskrit. He is editorializing.
The Sanskrit says bhūri-bhāreṇa — 'by an unbearable burden' — and dṛpta-nṛpa-vyāja, 'conceited men in the guise of kings.' Prabhupāda is not adding a political layer; he is naming the specific 20th-century form of the same disease. A living ācārya's job is exactly this: to show where the demon is wearing today's costume. If we strip the purport of its concreteness to keep it 'timeless,' we get a vague platitude — the very thing the Bhāgavatam refuses to be. The test is not whether his examples are dated but whether the diagnosis — that godless leadership produces unbearable burden — still holds. Look honestly at the world and answer. - Calling political opponents 'demons' and saying Kṛṣṇa descends to kill them is exactly the kind of religious thinking that has produced violence for centuries. This is dangerous.
Notice what Prabhupāda actually says Kṛṣṇa has descended as in our age: 'the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.' Not an army. Not a sword. A saṅkīrtana movement — chanting, prasāda, books. The Gauḍīya line, from Caitanya Mahāprabhu onward, has never picked up a weapon; Mahāprabhu's revolution was the holy name. The 'killing of demons' in this age is the killing of the demoniac mentality — first in our own ahaṅkāra, then by giving others the chance to hear about Kṛṣṇa. If anyone uses Bhāgavatam to justify violence, they have already left the paramparā. The verse asks us to grieve with mother earth, not to enlist.
Mother Earth, weighed down by demons posing as kings, is like a milch cow whose owner has loaded her with weapons instead of grass. The body that was made to feed others is being used to crush them. When the load becomes unbearable, she does not rebel; she goes to her owner — Brahmā — and reports. The reflex of the surrendered is to appeal upward, not to resist sideways.
