When I was a mere child of five years, I lived in a brāhmaṇa school. I was dependent on my mother’s affection and had no experience of different lands.

Translation
Only five years old, inexperienced with time, place and direction, I lived in a brāhmaṇa house, with the belief that she would never leave me.
Commentary
Tad-apekṣayā means “with the expectation that she would not give me up.”

Personal Guidance
Nārada lived a small, sheltered childhood — school, mother, no exposure to the wider world. Innocence and a narrow world are not failings; they are the soil in which simple faith first grows.
Reflection Questions
- What 'small world' am I dismissing that may actually be protecting something tender in me?
- When did sheltered simplicity teach me something complexity could not?
