  • puṇyaḥ — original, pure, sacred
puṇya usually means 'meritorious' but here qualifies gandha — 'the original, unspoiled fragrance.' Kṛṣṇa is the earth's perfume before any decay, the type-fragrance behind every particular smell.
  • gandhaḥ — fragrance
The defining quality of pṛthivī (earth) in sāṅkhya. Each gross element has one distinctive sense-quality; earth's is smell. Kṛṣṇa identifies precisely with the element's signature.
  • jīvanam — life
The principle that animates. Not life-form but life-as-such. Kṛṣṇa is what is alive in everything alive — a teaching with vast pastoral consequences for how a devotee treats other beings.
  • tapaḥ — penance, austerity
From √tap (to heat, to burn). The inner fire of self-discipline. Kṛṣṇa is not merely rewarding the ascetic — He is the ascetic's heat. The austerity is His presence.
  • tapasviṣu — in those who practice penance
Locative plural. The verse keeps locating Kṛṣṇa within — not above, not behind, but in. The grammar is theological: He is interior to the practice itself.
I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

Plain meaning (तात्पर्य · Tātparya)
Continuing the meditative inventory: Kṛṣṇa is the auspicious original fragrance of earth, the heat of fire, the life-force within every creature, and the austerity that sustains the tapasvī's discipline. The list elevates everyday phenomena into windows onto the divine.
Further notes (विवरण · Vivaraṇa)
Pṛthivyāṁ puṇyo gandhaḥ — Kṛṣṇa is the 'original' (puṇya) fragrance, not just any smell, suggesting an archetypal purity from which sensory experiences derive. Tapaḥ in tapasvinaḥ recasts ascetic effort itself as a divine quality, not a human achievement — the energy behind the discipline is Bhagavān, anticipating BG 9.27's command to dedicate every austerity to Him.

Puṇya means that which is not decomposed; puṇya is original. Everything in the material world has a certain flavor or fragrance, as the flavor and fragrance in a flower, or in the earth, in water, in fire, in air, etc. The uncontaminated flavor, the original flavor, which permeates everything, is Kṛṣṇa. Similarly, everything has a particular original taste, and this taste can be changed by the mixture of chemicals. So everything original has some smell, some fragrance and some taste. Vibhāvasu means fire. Without fire we cannot run factories, we cannot cook, etc., and that fire is Kṛṣṇa. The heat in the fire is Kṛṣṇa. According to Vedic medicine, indigestion is due to a low temperature in the belly. So even for digestion fire is needed. In Kṛṣṇa consciousness we become aware that earth, water, fire, air and every active principle, all chemicals and all material elements are due to Kṛṣṇa. The duration of man’s life is also due to Kṛṣṇa. Therefore by the grace of Kṛṣṇa, man can prolong his life or diminish it. So Kṛṣṇa consciousness is active in every sphere.

Translation
9. I am the fragrance of the earth element, the heat in fire, the life in all entities, the austerity in the tapasvī.
Commentary

Puṇya means “pleasing” or “natural” according to Amara Kośa. I am the natural fragrance of earth element. Ca indicates that this statement applies to all the elements. Thus, I am the pleasing taste of water, the pleasing form of fire as well as the natural fragrance of the earth element. I am the power of fire, the essence—that which can burn, illuminate, and relieve cold in all things. I am the life span of all entities—their essence. I am the toleration of suffering, the essence of those performing austerities. [Note: In this verse the Lord is the essence of all items, except the fragrance of earth. Fragrance is the cause of earth.]

Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa Gauḍīya
Translation
9. I am the fragrance of the earth element, the heat in fire, the life in all entities, and the endurance in the tapasvī.
Commentary

I am the sense object of natural (existing before transformation) fragrance (puṇyaḥ gandhaḥ) in the earth. The word ca is employed to indicate that the word puṇyaḥ applies to all the other sense objects in all other elements as well. I am the energy in fire—the form (rūpa) which enables all things to be cooked and illuminated. [Note: Form or rūpa is the sense object sustaining the element fire. Tejas is here regarded as equivalent to rūpa.] The word ca indicates that in air I am the natural sense object known as touch, which gives pain on touching something hot. [Note: In this way all the five elements are covered.] I am the life span of the living entities. I am the ability to endure the dualities such as heat and cold in the performers of austerities.

Commentary

Bhumir, the earth, is one of Krsna's energies. All the fragrances come from the earth ‑ so they come from Krsna. We plant the seed of a rose, the rose comes up. All we do is adding water. And the flower smells like a rose. Then we plant another type of seed, all we do is adding water, which has taste but no fragrance, and then...a campaka flower comes up, or a jasmine flower... all these different fragrances they are being extracted from the earth. How wonderful it is that Krsna has put the fragrances in the earth. Fire is another of Krsna's energies. And Krsna is the heat in fire, which we all appreciate (specially in winter). What is the life of all that lives? ‑ The soul. And Krsna explains 'apareyam tv anyan..', that the soul is one of His energies, non‑different from Him.

Theme

COMMON THEME: Krishna is the essence and cause of everything within the modes of material nature as

follows:

1. Taste of Water – Taste is the active principle of water e.g. No-one likes seawater

Attraction of water depends on purity of water
Pure taste is one of the energies of the Lord
Impersonalists perceive the Lord as the taste; but the personalists glorify the Lord for supplying the water

2. Light of Sun and moon – Originally comes from Brahmajyoti (impersonal effulgence)

3. OM of Vedic mantras

Om is the transcendental sound in the beginning of every Vedic hymn
Addresses the Supreme Lord
Impersonalists prefer to vibrate Omkara because they are very much afraid of addressing Krishna by His innumerable names

4. Sound of Ether

5. Ability of Man

Texts 7.8 – 7.11 continued…

Focus of Learning

(c) Refutes “life comes from chemicals” – because Krishna is the source of material energy

(d) Absolute Truth is personal or impersonal – Text 7.7 helps to solves this controversy

Refutes “Brahman is superior to Krishna” – because Text 7.7 states “no truth is superior to Me”
Ref. Brahma Samhita 5.1: “ishvarah paramah Krishna...”
Impersonalists argue based on Svetasvatara Upanisad 3.10
Their argument – The Absolute Truth has no material form based on the word “arupam”
Our Response: Arupam indicates no material form but a transcendental form of eternity, bliss and knowledge as substantiated by Ref: ▪

Ref. Brahma Samhita

▪

Ref. Svetasvatara Upanisad 3.8-3.9

6. Fragrance of Earth – “Punya” refers to uncontaminated original flavor/smell/taste which permeates

everything

‘Punya’ means that which is not decomposed or that which is original

7. Heat of Fire (Vibhavasau) – Fire in factories/cooking/digestive fire

Indigestion is due to low temperature in the belly

8. Life of all living being – Duration of man’s life is also due to Krishna

By Krishna’s grace one can prolong or diminish it

9. Penance of Ascetics

10. Original seed (Bijam) of all existence (Source of everything)

Seed of all 8.4 million species
Ref. Vedic Literatures: Brahman is the source of everything
Krishna is Parabrahman – The Supreme Spirit
Impersonal Brahman is situated in the personal aspect
Krishna is the original root of all that exists and thus He is the maintainer for everything (Ref. Katha Upanisad 2.2.13)

11. Intelligence of Intelligent

12. Prowess of all Powerful men

13. Strength of Strong – Devoid of passion and desires (strength should be applied to protect the weak, not

for personal aggression)

14. Regulated Sex life of Religious Principles (Dharma) – used for propagation of Krishna conscious children

7.9 I am also the punyah, sweet; gandhah, fragrance; prthivyam, in the earth. The earth is dependent on Me who am its fragrance. The natural sweetness of smell in the earth is cited by way of suggesting sweetness of taste of water etc. as well. But foulness of smell etc. is due to contact with particular things, resulting from nescience, unholiness, etc. of worldly people. Ca, and ; asmi, I am; the tejah, brilliance; vibhavasau, in fire; so also (I am) the jivanam, life-that by which all creatures live; sarva-bhutesu, in all beings. And I am the tapah, austerity; tapasvisu, of ascetics. Ascetics are established in Me who am that austerity.

7.8 - 7.11 All these entities with their peculiar characteristic are born from Me alone. They depend on Me; inasmuch as they constitute My body, they exist in Me alone. Thus I alone exist while all of them are only My modes.

7.9 Punyah etc. By its own nature pure is that smell which exists in the earth as its exclusive property. The foulness, the excessiveness [of th smell] are due to contamination of other elements. That has been stated [elsewhere] as : '[A particular thing] becomes hard because of the excess of the properties of the earth; foul-smelling on account of the rise of the fire-properties; and stiff due to liberality (excess) of the properties of water' and so on.

Bhava
I am the original fragrance of the earth, the heat in fire, the life in all that lives, the austerity of ascetics.
Practical Applications
  • Smell, warm yourself, breathe — and know Him as that quality.
  • Don't treat sense experience as profane; it is shot through with Him.
  • Use perception itself as remembrance.
Reflection Questions
  • Which sense most naturally connects me to Him?
  • Which most rarely?

Catch fragrance from a flower and you cannot say where in the petal it lives — it is the petal's perfume, not a separable contents. So Kṛṣṇa is the fragrance of earth, the heat in fire, the life in life. Not located in them; constituting their particular quality.

Haridāsa Ṭhākura's three hundred thousand names

Cast out, beaten through twenty-two marketplaces, refused entry to the temple because of his birth — Haridāsa Ṭhākura responded by chanting three lakhs of holy names each day in a cave, his life literally a tapasya unbroken until death.

Caitanya Mahāprabhu declared him Nāmācārya. Where did the strength come from? Kṛṣṇa says tapaḥ … asmi tapasviṣu — I am the penance in those who do penance. Haridāsa's austerity was not his own performance; it was the Lord, living in him as the fire of his vow.
