transcendental .
  • bhaktaḥ — devotee
From √bhaj — to share, to participate in, to serve. Bhakta is not merely a believer; it is one who has entered a relational mode with Kṛṣṇa. The first qualification for receiving the rahasyam is relational, not intellectual.
  • sakhā — friend
Friend on equal-footing terms. Arjuna does not stand below Kṛṣṇa as a supplicant; he rides beside Him on the chariot. Kṛṣṇa is naming sakhya-rasa explicitly as the qualifier for hearing the deepest yoga.
  • rahasyam — mystery, secret
From √rah, 'to be hidden.' Not 'mystical' in the modern fuzzy sense — 'confidential' in the precise sense of being unsuitable for indiscriminate broadcast. Some teachings are degraded by being told to the unprepared.
  • purātanaḥ — very old
Antiquity is being claimed as a *qualification*, not a defect. The yoga predates every philosophical school that has commented on it. To 'modernize' it is to misunderstand the direction of the arrow.
  • uttamam — highest, transcendental
Ut-tama — literally 'the topmost.' Among rahasyas, this one stands above. The Gītā places itself at the summit, not as one teaching among many.
That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

Plain meaning (तात्पर्य · Tātparya)
Kṛṣṇa reveals two qualifying credentials in Arjuna — devotion and friendship — and on that double basis declares the ancient yoga afresh. The teaching is identical to the primordial one; only the recipient is new. Eligibility for the highest mystery turns on personal relationship.
Further notes (विवरण · Vivaraṇa)
Crucial verse for understanding bhakti-adhikāra. The compound बhakto'si me sakhā ca shows that intimacy (sakhya-bhāva) plus surrender (bhakti) — not academic capability — opens the rahasyam. The verse also seals the legitimacy of Kṛṣṇa's instruction as a renewal, not innovation: 'that very same' yoga returns through a qualified channel.

There are two classes of men, namely the devotee and the demon. The Lord selected Arjuna as the recipient of this great science owing to his being a devotee of the Lord, but for the demon it is not possible to understand this great mysterious science. There are a number of editions of this great book of knowledge. Some of them have commentaries by the devotees, and some of them have commentaries by the demons. Commentation by the devotees is real, whereas that of the demons is useless. Arjuna accepts Śrī Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and any commentary on the Gītā following in the footsteps of Arjuna is real devotional service to the cause of this great science. The demonic, however, do not accept Lord Kṛṣṇa as He is. Instead they concoct something about Kṛṣṇa and mislead general readers from the path of Kṛṣṇa’s instructions. Here is a warning about such misleading paths. One should try to follow the disciplic succession from Arjuna, and thus be benefited by this great science of Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā.

3. As you are My devotee and friend, I have spoken this yoga, the ultimate secret, unto you today.
Commentary

In this verse, the Lord gives the reason for speaking this yoga to Arjuna. You are My devotee and My friend. Apart from these two reasons, He gives another reason for not speaking this to inferior persons: it is most secret.

3. As you are My devotee and friend, I have spoken this ancient yoga, unto you, because it is the most secret.
Commentary

This ancient yoga which should be spoken in this line of succession has been spoken today by Me, a friend to you, who am very attached to you, unto you, a friend to Me, who are very attached to Me. Because you are My devotee, surrendered to Me, and a friend, I have spoken to you, and no one else, since (hi) it is the most secret (rahasyam uttamam), and therefore should be concealed.

Bhūrijana Dāsa Gauḍīya
Commentary

It is also explained in the 15th Chapter that only a devotee can understand this science.

[ 2 . Krsna can remember speaking Bhagavad‑gita in a previous birth because He is the unborn Lord who possesses a transcendental body that never deteriorates. (4‑6) ]

Arjuna asks Krsna a question, he has a doubt.

Theme

COMMON THEME: Ancient origins of Bhagavad-gita and qualifications to receive

The Lord explains that science of work, explained in Chapters 2 and 3, is very old and authorized; and He gave this knowledge to Vivasvan and then the Supreme science was received through ‘disciplic succession’ (Answer to how it was received) but in the course of time the succession was broken.
Who is qualified to receive the transcendental mystery of this science?
Devotee
Friend (Devotee can be in one of the five primary rasas,e.g. Arjuna is a friend)
Other references on Qualifications Ref. 4.34, 4.39, 9.1, 18.67-68
Focus of Learning

(a) Importance of Bhagavad-gita for Royal order. Why? (4.1)

To rule the citizens and protect them from material bondage to lust
To impart “Krishna consciousness” and “value of human life” to citizens by education, culture and devotion
Thus helps them pursue a successful path of human life

(b) Importance of Bhagavad-gita being given to the sun-god as the first disciple (4.1)

This indicates that Bhagavad-gita is not a speculative treatise for insignificant mundane scholars but a standard book of knowledge from time immemorial
Krishna did not give this knowledge to any ordinary person
He selected sun god because the sun is the king of all planets and controls all planets and is rotating under Krishna’s order (Ref. Brahma Samhita 5.52)

(c) History of Bhagavad-Gita (4.1)

Exists in human society since Maharaj Iksvaku (2,005,000 years)
Given to Vivasvan at least 120,400,000 years ago
Again spoken to Arjuna 5000 years ago. Why? – Because original purpose was scattered by motives of unscrupulous commentators (4.2 purport)

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF TEXTS 4.1 – 4.3

The presentation of Bhagavad-gita’s history is a precursor to Krishna’s revelation of His

transcendental nature

Learning the tradition of this knowledge will give Arjuna faith in what he is hearing
Additionally, Krishna’s claim to be the original proponent of knowledge that is more than 2 million years old sparks a conversation that allows Krishna to reveal His supreme transcendental position

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF SECTION I

Krishna is Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who comes

to the world to protect eternal dharma. One who knows this is factually liberated

4.3 It is the same ancient, unchanged Yoga which is now taught to you, who out of friendship and overwhelming devotion have resorted to Me whole-heartedly. The meaning is that it has been taught to you fully with all its accessories. Because it is the most mysterious knowledge declared in the Vedanta, it cannot be known or taught by anyone other than Myself. In this connection, in order to know the truth about the Lord's descent correctly, Arjuna asked:

4.1-3 Evam etc. upto uttamam. Eventhough it has come down by regular succession of teacher, it is lost now. By this [statement] the Bhagavat indicates the rarity (or difficulty) and respectability of this knowledge. You are My devotee and friend too : You are a devotee having nothing but Me as your final goal and you are a friend too. This 'too' indicates the secondary importance [of the friendship]. Hence, just as in the sentence 'wander begging food [etc]', the importance lies in the act of begging food, but unimportance in the act of bringing the cow; in the same way, in the present case it is devotion towards the teacher that is important and not the friendship also. This is the idea intended here.

Practical Applications
  • Cultivate the qualifications — devotion and friendship to Kṛṣṇa — that make confidential knowledge accessible.
  • Don't expect deep teaching without the relational ground.
  • Approach scripture as friend would approach friend.
Reflection Questions
  • What in my relationship with Kṛṣṇa qualifies me for deeper teaching?
  • Where does my reading lack the friendship Arjuna brings?

A master shares a closely-held family secret only with one trusted enough to carry it without dilution. Arjuna receives the Gītā not because he is a philosopher but because he is a friend and a devotee — the two qualifications that open the inner room. Scripture is not withheld by Kṛṣṇa; it is withheld by the absence of the relational ground in the hearer.

Sudāmā at Dvārakā

When the impoverished brāhmaṇa Sudāmā arrived at Dvārakā with nothing but a fistful of flat rice, Kṛṣṇa rose from His throne, embraced him, and sat him down with His own queens fanning him. The intimacy was not earned by Sudāmā's brilliance or austerity. It was the friendship of their student days under Sāndīpani Muni that opened every door.

The Gītā here works on the same principle. Kṛṣṇa says: I am telling you, Arjuna, because you are bhakta and sakhā. Without those two, the same verses would have been only words.
