Bhagavad-gītā 5.11
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
kevalaiḥ
—
purified, only
Often translated 'pure' or 'sole.' The senses are used 'only' — kevala — for purification. The yogī has removed every other motive. Kevala will become a key technical term in later bhakti literature: kevalā bhakti, pure unmixed devotion.
-
saṅgam tyaktvā
—
giving up attachment
Absolutive — 'having abandoned attachment.' Again the action is preceded by an inner gesture: attachment is dropped first, then the act is performed. Compare ādhāya in verse 10; the sequencing is the practice.
-
ātma-śuddhaye
—
for the purpose of purification of the self
Dative — 'for the sake of.' The single declared motive of the yogī's action. Not livelihood, not duty alone, not even welfare of others — only ātma-śuddhi. Other goods follow naturally, but they are not the named motive.
-
kāyena manasā buddhyā
—
with body, mind, and intelligence
Instrumental triplet ascending in subtlety. The verse insists all three layers participate — body alone is not enough, mind alone is not enough. Total engagement, single motive.
-
yoginaḥ
—
Kṛṣṇa conscious persons
Plural — yogīs in general. Kṛṣṇa is not describing a rare specialist but the entire class of those engaged in karma-yoga. This is the working definition of a yogī in chapter 5.

When one acts in Kṛṣṇa consciousness for the satisfaction of the senses of Kṛṣṇa, any action, whether of the body, mind, intelligence or even the senses, is purified of material contamination. There are no material reactions resulting from the activities of a Kṛṣṇa conscious person. Therefore purified activities, which are generally called sad-ācāra, can be easily performed by acting in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī in his Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.2.187) describes this as follows: īhā yasya harer dāsye karmaṇā manasā girā nikhilāsv apy avasthāsu jīvan-muktaḥ sa ucyate “A person acting in Kṛṣṇa consciousness (or, in other words, in the service of Kṛṣṇa) with his body, mind, intelligence and words is a liberated person even within the material world, although he may be engaged in many so-called material activities.” He has no false ego, for he does not believe that he is this material body, or that he possesses the body. He knows that he is not this body and that this body does not belong to him. He himself belongs to Kṛṣṇa, and the body too belongs to Kṛṣṇa. When he applies everything produced of the body, mind, intelligence, words, life, wealth, etc. – whatever he may have within his possession – to Kṛṣṇa’s service, he is at once dovetailed with Kṛṣṇa. He is one with Kṛṣṇa and is devoid of the false ego that leads one to believe that he is the body, etc. This is the perfect stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
The karma-yogīs perform actions using the body, mind, intelligence and even the senses alone, while giving up attachment, for purification of the mind (ātma-śuddhaye). At the time of making offerings of oblations using the senses, the mind may wander. This is the manner in which only the senses are employed (kevalaiḥ indriyair api).
He further explains this by testifying that it standard conduct. The yogīs perform activities using the body, mind and intelligence, while being devoid of identification with those instruments. Kevalaiḥ here indicates “very pure.” They perform these acts, having given up the desire for results and the concept of being the doer (saṅgam tvaktvā as in the previous verse), in order to extinguish the beginningless identification with the material body and senses (ātmā śuddhaye).
“Kaivalya” comes from the root kevala, which in this verse is defined as “purified.” One becomes
purified by his detached work. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura explains: “Although one’s mind
may sometimes be distracted while making offerings of oblations such as indrīya svāhā, still, such a
person’s senses are kevala, acting for the purification of the ātmā, or for the sake of purifying the
mind.”
Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa explains this verse as follows: “Citing the behavior of saintly persons as
evidence, Kṛṣṇa elaborates on the previous verse with this verse beginning kāyena. Yogīs carry out
work that has to be executed with the body, mind, senses and so on, without any false identifica-
tion of the self with the body and so on. Kevala means ‘fully purified’ (viśuddha). In the phrase be-
ginning ‘abandoning attachment,’ the words ‘for the purpose of purification of the self’ mean ‘for
the sake of giving up one’s false identification with the body as the self, which one has maintained
since time immemorial.’”

- Reframe purification, not personal benefit, as the motive of practice.
- Use the body and mind as instruments of purification, not just acquisition.
- Notice when purification has slipped and acquisition has crept in.
- Where has acquisition replaced purification as my motive?
- What single practice this week is purely about purification?
A musician tunes his instrument not to display the instrument but so that the music can be true. The yogī tunes body, mind, intelligence, and senses not for personal acquisition but only ātma-śuddhaye — for the purifying of the self. The instrument is the means; purification is the only result claimed.
Born to immense wealth, Raghunātha renounced his family's mansions to live at the back door of the Govardhana hill in Vṛndāvana. He ate almost nothing — a little buttermilk, sometimes only chewed and spat out. He slept on bare stone. He chanted hundreds of thousands of names daily.
When visitors asked why he punished his body so, his reply was the verse's reply: not punishment, only purification. The body, mind, intelligence, senses — all were instruments being polished for the single use of Kṛṣṇa's pleasure. Nothing was being acquired; only the obstructions were being filed away.
Kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalair indriyair api — every layer was engaged, and every layer's only purpose was śuddhi.
