Bhagavad-gītā 11.53
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
vedaiḥ
—
by Vedas
Instrumental plural of veda. Not even by the Vedas themselves — the highest scriptural means is named first and ruled out as sufficient.
-
tapasā
—
by austerity
Instrumental singular of tapas. Same word as 11.48; the repetition concentrates the negation.
-
dānena
—
by charity
Instrumental singular of dāna. Charity, the householder's chief route to merit, ruled out.
-
ijyayā
—
by worship
Instrumental singular of ijyā — 'sacrificial worship.' Yajña under another name; the verse closes the ritual category from a second angle.
-
evam - vidhaḥ
—
of this kind
Adjective — 'of such-a-form.' Refers specifically to the universal form just withdrawn. The negation is precise: not this form, by these means.
-
yathā
—
as
Indeclinable — 'in the way that.' Arjuna has seen 'as I am' — yathā mām. The qualifier is the verse's quiet centre: not just any sight, but sight as the Lord actually is.

Kṛṣṇa first appeared before His parents Devakī and Vasudeva in a four-handed form, and then He transformed Himself into the two-handed form. This mystery is very difficult to understand for those who are atheists or who are devoid of devotional service. For scholars who have simply studied Vedic literature by way of grammatical knowledge or mere academic qualifications, Kṛṣṇa is not possible to understand. Nor is He to be understood by persons who officially go to the temple to offer worship. They make their visit, but they cannot understand Kṛṣṇa as He is. Kṛṣṇa can be understood only through the path of devotional service, as explained by Kṛṣṇa Himself in the next verse.
Moreover, please understand that others—who desire as the goal of their lives that svarūpa which is not desired by you— cannot see that form or know that form even by such practices as study of the Vedas.
This form is rare to see. I, your friend with four arms, the son of Devakī, cannot be seen by anyone devoid of bhakti, by any method whatever, even by studying the Vedas, by charities, by austerities or by worship, in the way that you are seeing Me.
All those were negative ways that one can try as much as he likes but one cannot see this form of Krsna. No matter how one tries through Vedas, austerities, etc, etc,,charity, worship, penances ‑ one can still not see this form of the Lord. Why? Because,
Text 53 indirectly glorifies bhakti by using negatives. Kṛṣṇa here mentions that the paths He has dis-
cussed in Chapters One through Six will not provide us the means by which we can truly see Him
in His most confidential, two-armed form. What, then, is the method by which we can see Kṛṣṇa?
11.53 न not? अहम् I? वेदैः by the Vedas? न not? तपसा by austerity? न not? दानेन by gift? न not? च and? इज्यया by sacrifice? शक्यः (am) possible? एवंविधः like this? द्रष्टुम् to be seen? दृष्टवानसि (thou) hast seen? माम् Me? यथा as.Commentary This Cosmic Form which thou hast seen so easily cannot be obtained either by the study of the Vedas and the six modes of philosophy? nor by the practice of manifold austerities (penances)? nor by charity? nor by sacrifices of various kinds.Arjuna was indeed very fortunate in seeing the Cosmic Form. How can the Lord be seen Listen The heart must be overflowing with true devotion to Him. - Recognize that vision is by grace alone.
- Don't bargain with Kṛṣṇa for vision.
- Cultivate the dispositions that invite grace, not the techniques that compel it.
- Where have I been bargaining?
- What does invitational practice look like instead?
A locked door cannot be opened by counting the keys in your pocket. Veda, tapas, dāna, ijyā — four good keys; none of them fits. The chapter's mounting list of insufficient means is not a critique of those practices; it is a clearing of the path for the one practice (verse 54) that does fit.
The Bhāgavatam (SB 1.2 and 1.18) repeatedly describes great sages — Bhṛgu, Vasiṣṭha, Atri — who, despite vast tapas and yajña, did not behold the highest form of the Lord until they took to the path of devotional hearing and chanting. Sūta Gosvāmī before the assembly of Naimiṣāraṇya formalises the principle: bhaktyā śravaṇa-kīrtanāt.
Kṛṣṇa's verse in 11.53 — na vedaiḥ, na tapasā, na dānena, na ijyayā — is the negative half of that same principle. The positive half is coming in verse 54: bhaktyā tu ananyayā.
