  • yathā — as, in whatever way
Correlative with tathā — 'as / so.' The verse is built on this pairing: the *manner* of surrender determines the manner of reciprocation. Not just whether you surrender but how.
  • prapadyante — surrender
Pra + √pad — 'to fall fully toward, to approach with surrender.' Same root as the technical term prapatti. The form is reflexive-middle: the surrendering happens to the one surrendering, as much as it is done by them.
  • bhajāmi — I reward / I reciprocate
From √bhaj — same root as bhakti. The Lord *bhajas* the devotee. The reciprocity is named with the very verb that names devotion: His worship of you matches your worship of Him.
  • vartma — path
Accusative singular — 'My path.' Read with 7.21–23: worshipers of demigods reach demigods, ancestor-worshipers reach ancestors, only those who surrender to Kṛṣṇa reach Kṛṣṇa. The verse names exact reciprocation, not a covert universalism — each path delivers exactly what its object can give.
  • anuvartante — follow
Anu + √vṛt — 'turn after.' Same root as vartma. Sarvaśaḥ ('in all respects') qualifies the reciprocation, not a hidden uniformity of destinations: each soul follows the path it has actually chosen, and Kṛṣṇa answers on those terms. The asymmetry of approach is preserved.
As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Pṛthā.

Plain meaning (तात्पर्य · Tātparya)
Reciprocity, not partiality. The Lord meets each seeker exactly as they approach Him — devotees as devotee, philosophers as philosopher, demigod-worshippers through their chosen forms. Even apparent unbelief is, structurally, still a path toward Him.
Further notes (विवरण · Vivaraṇa)
Foundational verse for understanding Kṛṣṇa's responsiveness and the legitimacy of multiple devotional approaches. Two cola — ye yathā / tathaiva (1st cola: approach=response) and sarvaśaḥ (every direction ultimately maps to Him). Cross-ref BG 7.21–23 (each form of worship leads to its own corresponding fruit, all sanctioned by Him).

Everyone is searching for Kṛṣṇa in the different aspects of His manifestations. Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is partially realized in His impersonal brahma-jyotir effulgence and as the all-pervading Supersoul dwelling within everything, including the particles of atoms. But Kṛṣṇa is fully realized only by His pure devotees. Consequently, Kṛṣṇa is the object of everyone’s realization, and thus anyone and everyone is satisfied according to one’s desire to have Him. In the transcendental world also, Kṛṣṇa reciprocates with His pure devotees in the transcendental attitude, just as the devotee wants Him. One devotee may want Kṛṣṇa as supreme master, another as his personal friend, another as his son and still another as his lover. Kṛṣṇa rewards all the devotees equally, according to their different intensities of love for Him. In the material world, the same reciprocations of feelings are there, and they are equally exchanged by the Lord with the different types of worshipers. The pure devotees both here and in the transcendental abode associate with Him in person and are able to render personal service to the Lord and thus derive transcendental bliss in His loving service. As for those who are impersonalists and who want to commit spiritual suicide by annihilating the individual existence of the living entity, Kṛṣṇa helps also by absorbing them into His effulgence. Such impersonalists do not agree to accept the eternal, blissful Personality of Godhead; consequently they cannot relish the bliss of transcendental personal service to the Lord, having extinguished their individuality. Some of them, who are not firmly situated even in the impersonal existence, return to this material field to exhibit their dormant desires for activities. They are not admitted into the spiritual planets, but they are again given a chance to act on the material planets. For those who are fruitive workers, the Lord awards the desired results of their prescribed duties, as the yajñeśvara; and those who are yogīs seeking mystic powers are awarded such powers. In other words, everyone is dependent for success upon His mercy alone, and all kinds of spiritual processes are but different degrees of success on the same path. Unless, therefore, one comes to the highest perfection of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all attempts remain imperfect, as is stated in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (2.3.10) : akāmaḥ sarva-kāmo vā mokṣa-kāma udāra-dhīḥ tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena yajeta puruṣaṁ param “Whether one is without desire [the condition of the devotees], or is desirous of all fruitive results or is after liberation, one should with all efforts try to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead for complete perfection, culminating in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.”

11. I respond to persons according to the amount that they surrender to Me. All men follow My path, O son of Pṛthā.
Commentary

”Your dedicated devotees consider Your birth and activities to be eternal, but others such as jñānīs, surrendering to You for the purpose of perfecting jñāna or other goals, do not consider Your birth and activities to be eternal.” “In whatever way they worship Me (prapadyante), I also give them the fruits of their worship (bhajāmi) in an appropriate manner.” The meaning is this. Those who think that My birth and activities are eternal and, having a particular desire for those pastimes, worship and please Me. And I, because I am the Lord, can respond, or not respond, or respond in a different way than they expect. But, making them My associates, I appear and disappear with them in this world at the appropriate time, in order to give My birth and pastimes their eternal nature. Favoring them at every moment, I bestow upon them the fruit of their worship. The jñānīs and others who surrender unto Me while thinking of My birth and activities as temporary, and thinking of My deity forms as material—I throw those jñānīs again and again into the noose of māyā with its temporary births and action, and bestow upon them the sorrows of birth and death. This is the appropriate fruit of their worship (They receive temporary bodies because they think My body is temporary.) But those jñānīs who accept the eternal nature of My birth and activities, consider My deity form to be sac-cid-ānanda, and surrender to Me for perfection of their jñāna— I liberate those jñānīs, since they desire the destruction of their gross and subtle bodies, and I give them the bliss of Brahman. I bestow upon them the desired result of their worship: the destruction of birth and death born from ignorance. Therefore, not only devotees surrender to Me, but rather everyone (sarvaśaḥ), all men, jñānīs, karmīs, yogīs, and worshippers of the devatās, follow My path (they surrender either directly or indirectly). Jñāna, karma and other processes are all My path, since I am the essence of all those paths.

11. I respond to persons according to the manner and mood in which they surrender to Me. All blessed men follow these various paths of worship, of Me, the one Lord, O son of Pṛthā.
Commentary

“I have to some degree understood that you are the Supreme Lord with attractive eternal birth and activities. And I have heard from scriptures that You, though the size of a thumb, [Note: Aṅguṣṭha mātraḥ puruṣas Madhya ātmani tiṣṭhati. Kaṭha Upaniṣad 4.12] are indeed the Lord without birth. Therefore, You should have various forms and there must be various methods of worshipping you.” “Yes, with whatever type of mood (yathā) the devotees worship (prapadyante) Me, the one Lord of all beings, but who possesses many forms like the vaidurya gem, [Note: The vaidūrya gem is often translated as cat’s eye and sometimes as lapis lazuli, an opaque blue stone. However, neither seems to fit the quality of vaidūrya referred to here. This vaidūrya emits a variety of colors from one stone. Among possibilities is alexandrite, another form of the same mineral (chrysoberl) as cat’s eye, which changes color with different types of light, usually shades of violet and green. Another possibility would be the opal.] I certainly (eva) respond (bhajāmi)—I am merciful to them, appearing before them correspondingly, with form and mood appropriate to their type of mood (tathā eva). (The word eva excludes probability.) All these men (manuṣyāḥ sarvaśaḥ), blessed with their lineages for worship which have no beginning, follow the path of worship (vartma) which has many types for the many different forms of Me, the one form (mama).

Commentary

The devotees who worship Krsna with love who want Krsna, who love Krsna ‑ they go to Goloka‑Vrndavana. And the mayavadis who think that Krsna's form and activities are not eternal, but they worship Him ‑ they are given to Mayadevi for repeated birth and death (according to Viswanath C. Thakura). And the brahmavadis who are different from the mayavadis, because they worship Krsna, they accept Krsna's form as eternal, but they worship Him to get to Brahman which they think it is higher then Krsna ‑ by Krsna's mercy they go to the Brahman. Knowing all these factors, that Krsna is the Supreme Lord and He can give one what he wants, why is it that some people don't surrender to Krsna? Why don't they worship Krsna?

Theme

By hearing about Krishna many, many persons in the past became purified and attained love for

Krishna. They attained love for Krishna because this was their desire and Krishna fulfilled it. What if someone

takes shelter of Krishna with something other than a desire to achieve transcendental love for Him? Text 4.11

explains Krishna’s reciprocation with such category of souls

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF 4.11

People on different paths are not realising different things.

They all realise different degrees and aspects of Krishna

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF SECTION II

Actions are transcendental when executed in full knowledge that Krishna

is the Supreme goal of all paths and the awarder of the results of all work

Focus of Learning

(a) Problem: They are too materially affected – They cannot understand personal nature of Lord as

per Text 4.9

(b) Different degrees of affliction

‘Raga’: Strong attachment to material life – leads to negligence of spiritual life
‘Bhaya’: Fear of personal spiritual identity – For them merging into impersonal is highest,
Because they are too absorbed in material bodily concept, concept of retaining personality after liberation from matter frightens them
e.g. Analogy: Impersonalists compare living entities to the bubbles in the ocean which merges into the ocean
‘Krodha’: Conception of void resulting from frustration of life
Become angry at all sorts of spiritual speculation out of hopelessness
Takes to intoxications
Accept hallucinations as spiritual vision

(c) Solution to get freedom from these three:

Take complete shelter of Lord
Under the spiritual master’s guidance
Follow disciplines and regulative principles of devotional life

(d) Different stages of bhakti – This is a progression to higher levels of purity, free from any of the

above mentioned three diseases

Sraddha to prema (study purport) (Ref. Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu 1.4.15 – 1.4.16)
This explains the ‘Science of devotional service’

LINK BETWEEN TEXTS 4.11 & 4.12: One could then ask: “If Krishna, the Supreme Lord, gives a soul

whatever he wants, why don’t more persons surrender to Him? Why do they worship others to fulfill

their desires?” Krishna answers this question in Text 12.

4.11 Yatha, according to the manner in which, the purpose for which, seeking, whatever fruit; prapadyante, they approach; mam, Me; aham, I; bhajami, favour; tan, them; tatha eva, in that very manner, by granting that fruit. This is the idea. For they are not seekers of Liberation. It is certainly impossible for the same person to be a seeker of Liberation and, at the same time, a seeker of rewards (of actions). Therefore, by granting fruits to those who hanker after fruits; by granting Knowledge to those who follow what has been stated (in the scriptures) and are seekers of Liberation, but do not hanker after rewards; and by granting Liberation to those who are men of wisdom and are monks aspiring for Liberation; and so also by removing the miseries of those who suffer- in these ways I favour them just according to the manner, in which they approach Me. This is the meaning. On the other hand, I do not favour anybody out of love or aversion, or out of delusion. Under all circumstances, O son of Prtha, manusyah, human beings; anuvartante, follow; sarvasah, in every way; mama, My; vartma, path, [The paths characterized by Knowledge and by action (rites and duties).] the path of God who am omnipresent. By 'human beings' are meant those people who become engaged in their respective duties to which they are alified according to the results they seek. 'If Your wish to be favourable is the same towards all creatures on account of the absence of the defects of love and aversion in You who are God, and You are there with Your capacity to grant all rewards, why then do not all, becoming desirous of Liberation, take refuge in You alone with the very knowledge that Vasudeva is everything?' As to that, hear the reason for this:
Śrī Rāmānujācārya Classical
Translation
4.11 Whoever desirous of resorting to Me, in whatever manner they think of Me according to their inclinations and take refuge in Me, i.e., resort to Me - I favour them in the same manner as desired by them; I reveal Myself to them. Why say much here! All men who are intent on following Me do experience, with their own eyes and other organs of sense in all ways, i.e., in every way wished by them, My form (including images), however inaccessible it might be to speech and thought of the Yogins. Now, after completing the incidental topic (with regard to divine incarnations), in order to teach the mode in which Karma Yoga itself acires the form of Jnana, He begins to speak of the difficulty in finding persons who are alified for Karma Yoga of this kind.

As they surrender to Me, I reciprocate accordingly — all paths in the end approach My path.
Practical Applications
  • Examine the texture of your surrender — is it conditional, partial, full?
  • Trust that Kṛṣṇa meets you exactly at the level of your offering.
  • Approach Him with your full self, not your edited self.
Reflection Questions
  • What is the actual shape of my surrender right now?
  • What conditions am I attaching to my devotion?

A mirror reflects whatever stands before it — partial reflection for the partial face, full reflection for the full face. Kṛṣṇa is naming Himself the mirror of the heart. The texture of His reciprocation is shaped exactly by the texture of your approach.

Bhīṣma and Duryodhana at the same field

At Kurukṣetra both Bhīṣma and Duryodhana faced the same Kṛṣṇa. Bhīṣma surrendered with single-pointed devotion and saw, at his death, Kṛṣṇa standing before him; Duryodhana sought from Kṛṣṇa only military support and received His army but not Himself. Same Lord, two reciprocations — each calibrated to the exact shape of the approach.

Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante — as they surrender, so He reciprocates. Kṛṣṇa does not impose a uniform response; He answers each soul on the terms that soul brings.

Mīrā's full offering

Mīrā ate poisoned food sent by her in-laws, embraced a snake placed in her basket, walked through every social humiliation Mewar could devise — and at every step her surrender was unconditional. She held back nothing: not reputation, not life, not the comfort of a normal marriage.

Gauḍīya hagiography preserves her story as a demonstration of this verse from the side of full bhajana. Kṛṣṇa's reciprocation matched her offering: He never left her songs. The verse promises no less to anyone whose offering reaches that completeness.
