Bhagavad-gītā 1.9
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
śūrāḥ
—
heroes
Same word he used for the *enemy* heroes in verse 4. Duryodhana applies *śūra* to both sides — a verbal admission of equality. The Gītā repeatedly forces the speaker to give the enemy the same nouns he gives himself.
-
mat - arthe
—
for my sake
*Mat-* (mine) + *arthe* (for the sake of). The deepest pronoun of the chapter, the same possessive that opened it in verse 1 (*māmakāḥ*). Duryodhana's soldiers are *for him*. The Pāṇḍavas' soldiers, by contrast, will be told repeatedly that their actions are for Kṛṣṇa.
-
tyakta - jīvitāḥ
—
prepared to risk life
Compound: *tyakta* (renounced) + *jīvita* (life). Literally "those by whom life has been given up." A rare moment of devotional language used in a mercenary cause — these men have *renounced their lives* for Duryodhana's project. The Gītā later asks what a *worthy* object of such renunciation looks like (the answer: Kṛṣṇa).
-
yuddha - viśāradāḥ
—
experienced in military science
*Yuddha* (warfare) + *viśārada* (expert, accomplished). *Viśārada* is a high word — used elsewhere for masters of any difficult art. Duryodhana acknowledges his men are *experts*; but expertise alone, without dharma, will not save them. The chapter is quietly establishing that competence and morality come apart.

As far as the others are concerned – like Jayadratha, Kṛtavarmā and Śalya – all are determined to lay down their lives for Duryodhana’s sake. In other words, it is already concluded that all of them would die in the Battle of Kurukṣetra for joining the party of the sinful Duryodhana. Duryodhana was, of course, confident of his victory on account of the above-mentioned combined strength of his friends.
Saumadatti refers to Bhūriśravā, the son of Somadatta.
“They are willing to give up their lives in order to help me (tyakta-jīvitāḥ).” This is the intended meaning of Duryodhana, though the literal meaning is “They have given up their lives.” Actually however, Kṛṣṇa will later say: mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savyasācin These warriors have already been killed by Me before the war has started. You be My instrument, O Arjuna. BG 11.33 Thus, the literal meaning of Duryodhana’s words are thus completely true.
Bhavān refers to Droṇa. Vikarṇa was a younger brother of Duryodhana. Saumadatti refers to Bhūriśravā. The troops of Droṇa and others are described as victorious in war (samitiṁjayaḥ). “These are only the outstanding persons on my side. There are also other warriors whose numbers cannot be counted (anye ca). There are many (bahavaḥ) such as Jayadratha, Kṛtavarma and Śalya, who are determined to give up their lives for my sake if necessary (tyakta jīvitāḥ). “My victory will be accomplished because of their intense affection for me, their intense courage, and their knowledge of fighting.” This is his hint in speaking.

situation – quite fit to be a politician (1.2)
2. Points out Drona’s mistake (of imparting military secrets to son of Drupada, Dhrstadyumna who was
born to kill Dronacharya) to make him alert and uncompromising and warns that leniency would lead to
defeat (1.3*)

4. Mentions heros who are ready to lay down their lives for “me” (like Jayadratha, Krtavarma, Salya) (1.9)

6. Asks for everyone’s support for Bhisma (1.11) – because

- Examine one loyalty you maintain — is it driven by pride, fear, devotion, or transaction?
- Notice the difference between mercenary commitment and surrendered service in your work.
- Offer one task today as service to Kṛṣṇa rather than as proof of your worth.
- What loyalties of mine are quietly transactional?
- Where is my 'service' actually self-promotion in disguise?
A king who says "there are *many other heroes* ready to die for me" without naming them is reaching for numbers because the names have run out. The unnamed *many* is the place where a confident inventory begins to slip into wishful thinking.
