Bhagavad-gītā 11.9
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
mahā - yoga - īśvaraḥ
—
the master of all mystic power
Compound: great + yoga + lord. Sañjaya stacks the title to forestall any reduction. The being now displaying the universal form is not a yogi who has accumulated siddhi; He is the Lord of yoga itself.
-
hariḥ
—
the Personality of Godhead
A Bhāgavata-tradition name. Hari is 'he who removes' — sins, attachments, illusions. Sañjaya quietly invokes the name of removal at the moment Arjuna's last illusions are about to be removed by sight.
-
darśayām āsa
—
displayed
Causative perfect of dṛś — 'caused to be seen.' Kṛṣṇa is the agent of the seeing; the form does not impose itself, it is shown.
-
pārthāya
—
to Arjuna
Dative — for the benefit of Pārtha. The vision is given to a specific person at a specific moment. Kṛṣṇa does not broadcast; He addresses.
-
paramam
—
supreme
Adjective qualifying rūpam. Not one form among many — the highest of the aiśvarya-forms, the one Arjuna asked for in verse 3.
Having spoken, the Lord showed the universal form to Arjuna. Seeing that form, Arjuna described it to the Lord. Saṣjaya relates what Arjuna said in six verses (9-14). Then (tataḥ), after giving Arjuna the celestial eyes, O Dhṛtarāṣṭra (rajan), the Lord, the great master of yoga, showed that supreme form of power to Arjuna.
Now, at this point, Sanjaya is describing what Arjuna saw.
Sañjaya, also empowered to see the universal form, next describes Arjuna’s vision.

- Receive Sañjaya's narration as the lens through which we still see this scene.
- Honor the messenger who relays the scene.
- Don't skip narrators in your reading.
- What narrators of the spiritual scene am I ignoring?
- What does honoring them open?
When the curtain rises, the narrator's voice fills in what no actor can show: who is speaking, in what register, to whom. Sañjaya is that narrator, and his single sentence — evam uktvā, having spoken thus — frames the entire vision that follows.
Throughout the Bhagavad-gītā, Sañjaya appears only at hinge moments — opening verse, the divya-cakṣus granted at the start, and again here at the unveiling of the universal form (Mahābhārata, Bhīṣma-parva).
His voice in 11.9 — mahā-yogeśvaro hariḥ — is doing theological work. He names Kṛṣṇa as both Hari and the great Lord of yoga, telling Dhṛtarāṣṭra (and us) the identity of the speaker before the form is described. Without this introduction, the wonders that follow could be misread as deva-līlā.
