Bhagavad-gītā 1.41
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
saṅkaraḥ
—
such unwanted children
*Saṅkara* repeated from v.40 — the mixed offspring of broken *varṇa* boundaries. The compound names a category of social and ritual disorder. Vyāsa is letting Arjuna develop the doctrine with technical accuracy; the diagnosis is correct, the prescription will be corrected.
-
narakāya
—
make for hellish life
*Naraka* — the technical Vedic underworlds. Dative case — *for the purpose of hell*. Arjuna's eschatology is specific: family-destroyers fall into *naraka*. The Gītā will not deny *naraka* (BG 16.16 confirms it) but will redefine the path away from it — surrender to Kṛṣṇa, not abstention from duty.
-
kula - ghnānām
—
for those who are killers of the family
*Kula* + *ghna* (slayer, from *han*). Genitive plural. Same *han*-root that the chapter is saturated with. Arjuna names *kula-ghna* as a class — those who *slay the family*. He is afraid of being categorized under this noun. The Gītā will teach that *not* fighting in this war is what makes one a *kula-ghna* — by allowing adharma to take over.
-
piṇḍa
—
offerings of food
*Piṇḍa* — the rice-ball offered to ancestors in *śrāddha* rites. Technical Vedic ritual term. The *piṇḍa* sustains the *pitṛs* in the *pitṛ-loka*. Without the *piṇḍa*, ancestors fall. Vedic religion is a system of *vertical reciprocity* between the living and the dead; *kula-kṣaya* breaks the system.
-
udaka
—
offerings of water
*Udaka* — the water libations also given in *śrāddha*. Together with the *piṇḍa*, the *udaka* makes the ancestor offering complete. The two words together name the full ritual. Arjuna's fear is technically precise: the entire *śrāddha* mechanism would lapse. The Gītā does not deny the importance of *śrāddha*; it teaches that surrender to Kṛṣṇa fulfils all such obligations at once (BG 18.66).
According to the rules and regulations of fruitive activities, there is a need to offer periodical food and water to the forefathers of the family. This offering is performed by worship of Viṣṇu, because eating the remnants of food offered to Viṣṇu can deliver one from all kinds of sinful reactions. Sometimes the forefathers may be suffering from various types of sinful reactions, and sometimes some of them cannot even acquire a gross material body and are forced to remain in subtle bodies as ghosts. Thus, when remnants of prasādam food are offered to forefathers by descendants, the forefathers are released from ghostly or other kinds of miserable life. Such help rendered to forefathers is a family tradition, and those who are not in devotional life are required to perform such rituals. One who is engaged in the devotional life is not required to perform such actions. Simply by performing devotional service, one can deliver hundreds and thousands of forefathers from all kinds of misery. It is stated in the Bhāgavatam (11.5.41) : devarṣi-bhūtāpta-nṛṇāṁ pitṝṇāṁ na kiṅkaro nāyam ṛṇī ca rājan sarvātmanā yaḥ śaraṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ gato mukundaṁ parihṛtya kartam “Anyone who has taken shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda, the giver of liberation, giving up all kinds of obligation, and has taken to the path in all seriousness, owes neither duties nor obligations to the demigods, sages, general living entities, family members, humankind or forefathers.” Such obligations are automatically fulfilled by performance of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The mixture of caste in the family leads to hell for those who destroy the family and its traditions. Not only do they go to hell, but because of this (hi indicates “reason”) the ancestors of the family (pitaraḥ) also fall to hell because of being deprived of the piṇḍa offerings from lack of sons who are qualified givers of piṇḍa.

- Examine how your home and community honor the feminine in its full spiritual dignity.
- Resist cultural currents that reduce women (or any soul) to objects of exploitation.
- Speak up when conversations or media in your circle degrade the feminine principle.
- What does my environment communicate to the women in it about their spiritual worth?
- Where do I tolerate cultural degradation that I should refuse?
When the rituals that link the living to the ancestors are interrupted, the dead drift. The Vedic worldview is dense with downward causation: the *piṇḍa* and *udaka* offerings sustain the *pitṛs*. A society that forgets its ritual obligations starves its own forebears.
