Bhagavad-gītā 13.26
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
ajānantaḥ
—
without spiritual knowledge
Present participle. Kṛṣṇa specifically honors those who *do not* possess prior knowledge. Hearing is not a consolation prize — it is a complete path in its own right.
-
śrutvā
—
by hearing
Gerund from √śru. The first of the navadhā-bhakti list. The Vedānta literature calls itself śruti for this reason — what is *heard* carries the tradition.
-
anyebhyaḥ
—
from others
Ablative plural. From sādhus, from the guru, from devotees. The *source* of hearing matters. Anyebhyaḥ implicitly requires that the others be authentic — hearing from anyone is not the path; hearing from devotees is.
-
upāsate
—
begin to worship
Upa- + √ās — "sitting near, attending upon." Hearing is not passive consumption; it becomes upāsana, devotional service. The faithful hearer becomes the worshiper.
-
atitaranti
—
transcend
Ati- + √tṝ — "to cross over." The same root as tīrtha (a crossing-place). Hearing is itself a tīrtha; the listener crosses the ocean of birth and death by audition alone.
-
śruti - parāyaṇāḥ
—
inclined to the process of hearing
Compound: śruti (hearing) + parāyaṇa (devoted, given over to). The whole life-orientation is hearing. This is a vocation, not a hobby.
This verse is particularly applicable to modern society because in modern society there is practically no education in spiritual matters. Some of the people may appear to be atheistic or agnostic or philosophical, but actually there is no knowledge of philosophy. As for the common man, if he is a good soul, then there is a chance for advancement by hearing. This hearing process is very important. Lord Caitanya, who preached Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the modern world, gave great stress to hearing because if the common man simply hears from authoritative sources he can progress, especially, according to Lord Caitanya, if he hears the transcendental vibration Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. It is stated, therefore, that all men should take advantage of hearing from realized souls and gradually become able to understand everything. The worship of the Supreme Lord will then undoubtedly take place. Lord Caitanya has said that in this age no one needs to change his position, but one should give up the endeavor to understand the Absolute Truth by speculative reasoning. One should learn to become the servant of those who are in knowledge of the Supreme Lord. If one is fortunate enough to take shelter of a pure devotee, hear from him about self-realization and follow in his footsteps, one will be gradually elevated to the position of a pure devotee. In this verse particularly, the process of hearing is strongly recommended, and this is very appropriate. Although the common man is often not as capable as so-called philosophers, faithful hearing from an authoritative person will help one transcend this material existence and go back to Godhead, back to home.
Others, who worship Paramātmā, hearing talks from various sources, also surpass death.
Others, though not knowing these methods, having faith in hearing the topics of the Veda (śruti parāyaṇāḥ), are thus qualified. Hearing those methods from speakers of the methods (anyebhyaḥ), they worship that great Lord. Even they, from that association (ca), gradually, after understanding and practicing (ca), definitely (eva) surpass death. The great power of hearing the subject of the Lord is here shown.
'They transcend', why? Because they hear with faith. That is what means to hear from authorities ‑ to hear with faith and without any material desires. Therefore, just by that process of hearing with faith, without material desires, they will attain liberation, they will transcend the path of birth and death. (DS) For those who cannot cultivate knowledge or practice yoga, or renunciation of the fruits of work, in order to attain the Supersoul, for them an alternative is given herein: 'just by hearing of Him from authorities.
[F. JNANA CAKSUSA: THE VISION OF KNOWLEDGE (13. 27‑35) 1. Everything that we see is a combination of the field and the knower of the field. (27) ]

- Recognize hearing as a complete path on its own.
- Don't disqualify yourself if you can't meditate or philosophize — hear.
- Cultivate śravaṇam as primary practice.
- What is my śravaṇam discipline?
- What would deepening hearing offer?
A man too weak to climb the mountain himself sits by the road and listens, as travelers returning from the summit describe the view. By the end of many evenings he can sketch the summit better than some who climbed. Hearing alone has carried him. So the simple soul, hearing of Kṛṣṇa from devotees, transcends death.
Cursed to die within seven days, Mahārāja Parīkṣit sat by the Ganges and heard the Bhāgavatam from Śukadeva Gosvāmī. He did not meditate. He did not philosophize. He listened.
At the appointed hour, when the snake-bird Takṣaka came, Parīkṣit's mind was so absorbed in hari-kathā that death had nothing to take. The Bhāgavatam frames its entire structure around this listener. Śravaṇa alone, the verse promises, ferries the soul across mṛtyu — and Parīkṣit's seven days are the demonstration.
