Bhagavad-gītā 4.37
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
edhāṁsi
—
firewood / fuel
Neuter plural of edhas — fuel pieces. The image is concrete: pieces of seasoned wood, not vague 'sin' or 'karma' in the abstract. The verse insists on the materiality of the analogy.
-
samiddhaḥ
—
well-kindled
Past passive participle of sam + √idh — 'thoroughly inflamed.' A *fully lit* fire, not a smoldering one. The quality of the fire matters: weak jñāna does not burn karma; samiddha-jñāna does.
-
bhasma - sāt
—
into ashes
Compound: bhasma (ash) + the suffix -sāt ('into the state of'). Paired with kurute ('makes'), the phrase means 'reduces (it) into ashes.' Sanskrit's exact way of expressing total transformation, not partial reduction.
-
jñāna - agniḥ
—
the fire of knowledge
Same compound as in 4.19 (jñāna-agni-dagdha). Knowledge is again grammatically the fire. The image is consistent across the chapter; the verse here just makes the simile explicit.
-
sarva - karmāṇi
—
all (reactions to) activities
Sarva (all) + karmāṇi (works, plural). The fire's scope: *all* karmic residue, not merely recent sins. The dry wood of lifetimes burns in the same blaze.
Perfect knowledge of self and Superself and of their relationship is compared herein to fire. This fire not only burns up all reactions to impious activities, but also all reactions to pious activities, turning them to ashes. There are many stages of reaction: reaction in the making, reaction fructifying, reaction already achieved, and reaction a priori. But knowledge of the constitutional position of the living entity burns everything to ashes. When one is in complete knowledge, all reactions, both a priori and a posteriori, are consumed. In the Vedas ( Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad 4.4.22) it is stated, ubhe uhaivaiṣa ete taraty amṛtaḥ sādhv-asādhūnī: “One overcomes both the pious and impious reactions of work.”
Knowledge arising from purity of heart destroys all karmas except the prārabdha-karmas. [Note: Prārabdha-karmas are those which are being experienced in this life. Aprārabdha-karmas are those which are waiting for future life times, not this life. Jṣāna destroys the aprārabdha-karmas but not the prārabdha-karmas. Bhakti destroys all karmas.] This verse illustrates with an example. Samiddhaḥ means “blazing.”
It has just been said that sinful reactions are destroyed by brahma vidyā (knowledge of the Lord and ātmā). Now this verse says that even puṇya karmas are destroyed by brahma vidyā. Just as blazing (samiddhaḥ) fire turns fuel wood (edhāṁsi) to ashes, the fire of knowledge, the fire of realization of ones own ātmā and paramātmā, turns to ashes all reactions, including those arising from pious acts, but not the prārabdha reactions. That knowledge burns up all accumulated past karmas which are like reeds but not the prārabdha ones. And that knowledge also transforms the actions performed in the present life, and makes them like drops of water rolling off a lotus leaf, having no reactions. Though the prārabdha karmas are extremely weakened by the influence of this knowledge, they are still situated in the person with realization of ātmā, by the will of the Lord, in order to preach the proper path of conduct. [Note: If the prārabdha karmas were completely destroyed, the body of the devotee, the result of prārabdha karma, would also disappear, and thus there would be no one to preach the Lord’s message.] The śruti says: ubhe uhaivaiṣa ete taraty amṛtaḥ sādhvasādhunī The realizer of Braman overcomes all reactions to sinful and piety actions (sādhvasādhunī), of both accumulated and present types (ubhe). Bṛhad Āraṇyaka Upaniṣad 4.4.22 The meaning of the verse is this. The realizer of Brahman (eṣa) overcomes the past reactions (except prārabdha) and presently accruing reactions by actions in this life (ubhe) in the form of pious and sinful reactions (sādhvasādhunī). The author of the Sūtras says: tad-adhigama uttara-pūrvārdhayor aśleṣa-vināśau tad-vyapadeśāt On attaining this, there is destruction previous sins and non-clinging of future sins. Because it is declared. Vedānta Sūtra 4.1.13
When one thinks that transcendental knowledge is going to destroy all the reactions to activities normally he thinks about sinful reactions and he is eager to welcome the pious reactions, let me enjoy them. But actually transcendental knowledge burns to ashes both, pious and sinful activities.
By that knowledge of self and Supersoul and their relationship, one burns all sinful reactions
(a) Analogy: Knowledge compared to fire – burns all reactions to material activities
(b) Two types of reactions: pious and impious; priori and posteriori (Ref. Brhad-aranyaka Upanisad) –
both burnt
(c) 4 stages of reaction – All are burnt by transcendental knowledge
1. Reaction in the making
2. Reaction fructifying
3. Reaction already achieved
4. Reaction a priori
(a) Analogies:
(d) Example of “Maya” – Arjuna’s thoughts of temporary bodily conception
(e) What does liberation / freedom from illusion mean – to know constitution as eternal servitor
(f) What is the entire teaching of the Bhagavad-gita targeted towards –
(g) What is the level of perfect knowledge – Supreme soul Krishna, is the supreme shelter of all living
beings
4.37 यथा as? एधांसि fuel? समिद्धः blazing? अग्निः fire? भस्मसात्कुरुते reduces to ashes? अर्जुन O Arjuna? ज्ञानाग्निः fire of knowledge? सर्वकर्माणि all actions? भस्मसात्कुरुते reduces to ashes? तथा so.Commentary Just as the sees that are roasted cannot germinate? so also the actions that are burnt by the fire of knowledge cannot bear fruits? i.e.? cannot bring man to this world again for the enjoyment of the fruits of his actions. This is reducing actions to ashes. The actions lose their potency as they are burnt by the fire of knowledge. When the knowledge of the Self dawns? all actions with their results are burnt by the fire of that knowledge just as fuel is burnt by the fire. When there is no agencymentality (the idea I do this)? when there is no desire for the fruits? action is no action at all. It has lost its potency. The fire of knowledge can burn all actions except the Prarabdha Karma? or the result of the past action which has brought this body into existence and which has thus already begun to bear fruits or produce effects.According to some philosophers even the Prarabdha Karma is destroyed by the fire of knowledge. Sri Sankara says in his AparokshanubhutiIn the passage his actions are destroyed when the Supreme is realised the Veda expressly speaks of actions (Karmas) in the plural? in order to signify the destruction of even the Prarabdha. There are three kinds of Karmas or reaction to or fructification of past actions (1) Prarabdha? so much of the past actions as has given rise to the present birth? (2) Sanchita? the balance of the past actions that will give rise to future births -- the storehouse of accumulated actions? and (3) Agami or Kriyamana? acts being done in the present life. If by the knowledge of the Self only the Sanchita and Agami were destroyed and not Prarabdha? the dual number would have been used and not the plural. (Sanskrit grammar has singular? dual and plural numbers). (Cf.IV.1019)

- Trust that real knowledge has the power to burn karmic residue.
- Don't anxiously try to 'work off' karma manually; let knowledge burn it.
- Cultivate the fire steadily — small flame burns slowly, big flame fast.
- What karmic residue am I trying to manually undo?
- Where would the fire of knowledge be more effective?
A pile of dry wood — accumulated for years, looking unmovable — is reduced to soft ash in an afternoon by a fully-lit fire. Knowledge has the same chemistry against karmic accumulation. The verse promises not slow attrition but combustion: same wood, gone.
