That part of bhakti is called bhāva, whose essence is saṁvit and hlādinī śakti, which is one ray of the sun of prema which will soon rise in the heart, and which softens the heart with desires to meet, serve, and exchange love with the Lord.

NoD 17: Ecstatic Love By the process of executing regulated devotional service, one is actually elevated onto the transcendental stage, beyond the material modes of nature. At that time one’s heart becomes illuminated like the sun. The sun is far above the planetary systems, and there is no possibility of its being covered by any kind of cloud; similarly, when a devotee is purified like the sun, from his pure heart there is a diffusion of ecstatic love which is more glorious than the sunshine. Only at that time is the attachment to Kṛṣṇa perfect. Spontaneously, the devotee becomes eager to serve the Lord in his ecstatic love. At this stage the devotee is on the platform of uttama-adhikārī, perfect devotion. Such a devotee has no agitation from material affections and is interested only in the service of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. To clarify, in the previous chapters the symptoms of devotional service were explained along with instructions as to how we may execute devotional service with our present senses and gradually rise to the platform of ecstasy in spontaneous love. And the two kinds of devotional service—namely devotional service through regulative principles and through spontaneous love—were discussed. Within the stage of the regulative principles of devotional service there are two divisions—namely executive and effective. This effective portion of devotional service is called bhāva, or ecstasy.

Commentary

Bhāva-bhakti should be defined. Previously two types of bhakti were delineated in discussing the general qualities of bhakti: ceṣṭā-rūpa and bhāva-rūpa. Ceṣṭā-rūpa-bhakti (bhakti consisting of action) has two types: sādhana-rūpa for attaining bhāva-bhakti (actions as practice for attaining bhāva), and kārya-rūpa (actions after attaining bhāva—the goal of practice). Kārya-rūpa-bhakti takes the form of anubhāvas when one experiences rasa. Sādhana-rūpa-bhakti has just been described. The anubhāvas of kārya-rūpa-bhakti will be shown in relation to rasa in the second wave of the Southern Section. Bhāva-rūpa-bhakti has two types: sthāyi-rūpa (permanent emotion) and sañcāri-rūpa (transitory emotion). Sthāyi-rūpa has two types: 1) prema, which also indicates higher states such as praṇaya; and 2) bhāva, also called rati, which is the preliminary stage of bud of prema. Sañcāri-rūpa-bhakti will be discussed later in relation to rasa, in the fourth wave of the Southern Section. [Note: Sthāyi-bhāva is discussed in the fifth wave of the Southern Section.] śuddha-sattva-viśeṣātmā Now, this verse describes bhāva, also called rati, which is the general form of the sthāyi-bhāva, and the bud of the sthāyi-bhāva which continues to exist in the higher stages such as praṇaya and mahā-bhāva. By using the phrase śuddha-sattva-viśeṣātmā, the author indicates that, in the future, this bhāva will transform into more elevated states, culminating in mahā-bhāva. In the verse, śuddha-sattva refers to saṁvit, which is a transformation of the Lord’s svarūpa-śakti. Saṁvit means knowledge—whose intrinsic nature is that it is self-revealing. [Note: “Self-revealing” is a phrase used to indicate the essential nature of knowledge. Knowledge must have, as a basic component, an awareness of self. Based on this, awareness of other objects arises.] Śuddha-sattva, here, does not indicate the mode of goodness, which is also called sattva, but which belongs to material nature. This śuddha-sattva is described in the second part of the Bhagavat-sandarbha, and in the second chapter of the Vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī. As well, the combination of śuddha-sattva with the word viśeṣa, to form the word śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa (excellent part of śuddha-sattva), refers to another transformation of the svarūpa-śakti called hlādinī. This śakti is described in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa: hlādinī sandhinī saṁvit tvayy ekā sarva-saṁśraye | hlāda-tāpa-karī miśrā tvayi no guṇa-varjite || The hlādinī, sandhinī and saṁvit śaktis are one energy, which resides in You, the shelter of all things. The mixture of happiness and distress found in the material world does not exist in You, who are beyond the guṇas. Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.12.69 Following from this statement, it should be understood that this hlādinī is the greatest energy of the Lord, and should be understood to be the very essence of all the combined, concentrated transformations of His svarūpa-śakti. Furthermore, the power of the combination of hlādinī and saṁvit causes the most intense state of desiring to please the Lord. This intense desire resides within the Lord’s eternal associates. Further, concentration of this condensed hlādinī will transform bhāva into the highest state of mahā-bhāva called modana. This is the subject of Śrī Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi: rādhikā-yūtha evāsau modano na tu sarvataḥ | yaḥ śrīmān hlādinī-śakteḥ suvilāsaḥ priyo varaḥ || Modana belongs to Rādhā’s group and does not appear elsewhere. It is the most glorious, pleasing, charming manifestation of the hlādinī-śakti. Ujjvala Nīlamaṇi 14.176 asau bhāva ucyate

śarīrendriya-vargasya vikāraṇāṁ vidhāyakāḥ |bhāvāvirbhāva-janitāś citta-vṛttaya īritāḥ || Bhāvas are defined as a variety of conditions of the mind, produced though a relation between a subject and an object of love, which produces transformations of the body and senses. BRS 2.4.251 Citta-vṛtti in the definition refers to a variety of conditions (transformations) of the mind. Amara-kośa says vikāro mānaso bhāvaḥ: bhāva means transformation of the mind. This does not refer, in the present context, to the vyabhicāri-bhāvas (which also transform the mind), which will be described later. That is because, in the present definition, it is mentioned that bhāva creates a softening of the heart. The vyabhicāri-bhāvas do not soften the heart, but rather act upon those devotees whose hearts have already been softened. The verse also describes bhāva as the preliminary state of prema, and this cannot apply to the vyabhicāri-bhāvas. Therefore, the meaning is this. That general bhakti (asau), which was defined as favorable service to the Lord, is called bhāva when referring to one particular portion of it called bhāva-rūpa-bhakti. What is the essential nature of that bhāva? Bhāva has, as its svarūpa or essence (ātmā), Kṛṣṇa’s svarūpa-śakti, in the form of hlādinī and saṁvit (śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa). This svarūpa is an eternal object, an eternal manifestation (nitya-siddha), situated within the eternal dear associates of the Lord. [Note: This was described in the definition of sādhana-bhakti. This bhāva-bhakti, the end result of sādhana, is spiritual, and therefore eternal. It manifests within a person at the stage of bhāva, but is eternally present within the eternal associates.] Uniting itself with its place of appearance (namely, the mind of the devotee), this bhāva becomes a variety of mental conditions (citta-vṛtti) characterized by a favorable attitude to the Lord. [Note: This means the emotional and perceptual functions of the jīva for perceiving the Lord are accomplished by the eternal saṁvit and hlādinī śaktis.] rucibhiś citta-māsṛṇya-kṛd Furthermore, this bhāva softens the heart (mind) with its desires (rucibhiḥ) for meeting the Lord, serving the Lord favorably, and attaining the friendship of the Lord. This bhāva is also the sprout, which will become prema, and which will be described later. prema-sūryāṁśu-sāmya-bhāk By comparing prema to the sun, there is the suggestion that, just as the sun will appear soon after the light of dawn, prema will appear very soon after the appearance of bhāva. As well, it is like a ray of the sun (prema-sūryāṁśu-sāmya-bhāk); it is the first glow of the sun of prema. It will be explained later that prema is the condensed form of bhāva: bhāvaḥ sa eva sāndrātmā budhaiḥ premā nigadyate (BRS 1.4.1) This bhāva, whose very form is the essence of the hlādinī function of the Lord, should also be understood to be non-material, since it makes the happiness of liberation insignificant, [Note: This quality of bhāva was discussed in the first wave of the Eastern Section.] brings about the Lord’s appearance, and produces bliss. If one is particularly inquisitive about proofs, one should see the Prīti-sandarbha. Though this bhāva is seen in the eternal associates of the Lord, the mental conditions of the devotees within this world become similar, by the mercy of the Lord and His devotees. By this mercy alone it shall appear. There is no need to elaborate further.

In a tantra, [Note: The word tantra can refer to the Pañcarātra scriptures or other works of similar nature.] it is said: The preliminary state of prema is called bhāva. There are a few sāttvika-bhāvas such as tears in the eyes and hairs standing on end.

In this connection, there is a statement in the tantras that ecstasy is the first symptom of pure love for the Personality of Godhead, and in that stage one is sometimes found shedding tears or shivering. Not always are these symptoms manifest, but occasionally.

An example of sāttvika-bhāvas appearing at this stage, from the Padma Purāṇa: Continually meditating on the lotus feet of the Lord, Ambarīṣa developed slight transformations of heart and tears in his eyes.

When King Ambarīṣa was put into difficulty by Durvāsā, he began to think of the lotus feet of the Lord, and thus there were some changes in his body, and tears were falling from his eyes. These symptoms are activities of ecstasy. They are visible in the shivering of the body and the shedding of tears.

Appearing in the mental functions, bhāva becomes the mental state itself. Though bhāva is self-revealing, it appears to become manifest by the mind. Though in its essential nature bhāva is taste itself, it also acts as a cause of tasting the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa, His associates and His pastimes.

After the outward appearance of these ecstatic symptoms, they stay within the mind, and continuation of the ecstasy is called samādhi. This stage of appreciation becomes the cause of future exchanges of loving affairs with Kṛṣṇa.

Two verses now describe in more detail that rati or bhāva, which was just described, when it appears in the Lord’s dear devotees in this world. That (asau), which has the form of śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa and has pleasure as its essence, is called rati, because, literally, the meaning of rati is “pleasure.” Though this rati is self-revealing (not dependent on anything else), since it reveals Kṛṣṇa and everything else, it (by its mercy) manifests within the functioning of the mind of the Lord’s dear devotees in this world, and then becomes one with their minds—it becomes their minds and their emotions (tat-svarūpatām vrajantī). It appears (bhāsamānā) in the mind as if by the actions of the mind (prakāśyavat) (though it is self-revealing, independent). This is like Brahman, the Supreme Lord, who, though self-revealing and independent, makes His appearance as if being born. By its own arrangement (svayam), bhāva acts as previous and later states—as both cause and effect. Factually, bhāva is taste or delight itself, by its portion which experiences the sweetness of Kṛṣṇa. Still (tu), rati or bhāva (asau) by another portion becomes the cause of tasting Kṛṣṇa’s many forms and activities, which are most desired by the experiencer. Its samvit (awareness) portion accomplishes this effectively. However, by the hlādinī portion, rati, simply, remains as a blissful state—it is the experience of bliss (effect). [Note: By bhāva, one is able to perceive Kṛṣṇa. But, in perceiving Kṛṣṇa, one experiences bhāva, blissful love of Kṛṣṇa.] Vastutaḥ here means “what actually happens.” The word tu is used to show distinction of the two aspects, cause and effect. Kṛṣṇādi means Kṛṣṇa and His associates, pastimes, form and qualities. [Note: The word kṛṣṇa also indicates other forms of the Lord.]

Bhāva appears in very fortunate persons in two ways: by absorption in sādhana or by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa or His devotee. Its appearance by sādhana is normal, and its appearance by mercy is rare.

Elevation to this stage of ecstasy can be possible in two ways. One way is by constant association with pure devotees. The other way is by the special mercy of Kṛṣṇa or by the mercy of a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa. Elevation to the ecstatic stage of life is generally attained through association with pure devotees, while elevation to that stage by the special mercy of Kṛṣṇa or His devotee is very rare. The purport is that one should execute devotional service rigidly in the association of devotees so that there will be certainty in raising oneself to that ecstatic position. In special cases, of course, there is special favor from Kṛṣṇa, and although we should always expect that, we should not sit idly and simply wait for Kṛṣṇa’s special mercy; the regular duties must be performed. It is just as when, sometimes, it is found that a person who never attended school or college may be recognized as a great scholar, or an honorary degree from great universities may be offered to him. But this does not mean that one should avoid school and expect to automatically receive an honorary degree from some university. Similarly, one should devoutly execute the regulative principles of devotional service and at the same time hope for Kṛṣṇa’s favor or for His devotee’s favor.

This verse describes two ways in which bhāva appears: by sādhana and by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and His devotees. Bhāva may arise by vaidhi-sādhana or rāgānuga-sādhana. This gives rise to two varieties of bhāva. “Sādhana gives rise to niṣṭhā. Without developing ruci and then āsakti, how will bhāva arise?” This verse answers by saying that one must go through those stages.

Bhāva arising from vaidhi-sādhana is illustrated: O Vyāsadeva, in that association, and by the mercy of those great Vedāntists, I could hear them describe the activities of Lord Kṛṣṇa. These became very attractive (ruci). Thus, listening attentively (āsakti), [Note: This meaning is from Viśvanātha’s Bhāgavatam commentary.] rati for the Personality of Godhead appeared. SB 1.5.26

An example of rising to the stage of ecstatic love by executing the regulative principles of devotional service is given in the life story of Nārada, which is described to Vyāsadeva in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Nārada tells there of his previous life and how he developed to the stage of ecstatic love. He was engaged in the service of great devotees and used to hear their talks and songs. Because he had the opportunity to hear these pastimes and songs of Kṛṣṇa from the mouths of pure devotees, he became very attracted within his heart. Because he had become so eager to hear these topics, he gradually developed within himself an ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa.

“There, every day, by the mercy of the sages, who were reciting topics about Kṛṣṇa, hearing those topics, I developed rati for Kṛṣṇa, who has pleasing fame.” Mercy (anugraha) mentioned in this verse means that the devotees gave their permission to Nārada to hear, following the scriptural procedure. “You should also listen to these talks about Kṛṣṇa.” This indicates vaidhi-bhakti. The word manoharā means, “Causing the appearance of ruci.” Though one should mention that faith, as the starting point of all stages, is the cause of rati, the description is given in this way to show the quick appearance of rati from absorption in the stages arising after anartha-nivṛtti.

Commentary

The mercy, or anugraha, mentioned in this verse means that the devotees gave their permission to Nārada to hear. This is the scriptural procedure. “You should also listen to these talks about Kṛṣṇa.” Manoharāḥ (attractive) indicates, “Causing the appearance of ruci.” Śraddhā, or faith, is not mentioned in the verse, since it is always a necessary element.

The word rati in the Bhāgavatam verse indicates bhāva, not prema, because, two verses later, the appearance of prema is indicated with the words “My bhakti (prema) then appeared.”

This ecstatic love is prior to the pure love of Kṛṣṇa, because in the next verse Nārada confirms that by the gradual process of hearing from the great sages he developed love of Godhead.

Commentary

In verse 1.5.28 of the Bhāgavatam (quoted in the next verse of the text), Nārada says bhaktiḥ pravṛttātma rajas-tamopahā. The word bhakti indicates prema. Thus in the context, rati, in this verse, means bhāva, since it is the preliminary state, and bhakti means prema, since it is the superior state. Thus, the difference between bhāva and prema, as stated in the definition of bhāva, is illustrated: bhāva is like a ray of the sun of prema.

There it is also said: Thus during two seasons—the rainy season and autumn—I had the opportunity to hear these great-souled sages constantly chant the unadulterated glories of the Lord Hari. As the flow of my prema appeared, the coverings of the modes of passion and ignorance vanished. SB 1.5.28

In that connection, Nārada continues to say in the First Canto, Fifth Chapter, verse 28, of the Bhāgavatam, “First I passed my days in the association of the great sages during the rainy autumn season. Every morning and evening I heard them while they were singing and chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, and thus my heart gradually became purified. As soon as I heard them with great attention, the influence of the modes of material ignorance and passion disappeared, and I became firmly fixed in devotional service to the Lord.” This is a practical example of how one can develop to the stage of ecstatic love simply by the association of pure devotees. It is essential, therefore, that one constantly associate with pure devotees who are engaged morning and evening in chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. In this way one will get the chance to purify his heart and develop this ecstatic pure love for Kṛṣṇa.

In the Third Canto, there is a similar usage of the word bhakti: In the association of pure devotees, discussion of the pastimes and activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very pleasing and satisfying to the ear and the heart. By cultivating such knowledge, one gradually develops faith, rati and prema for Kṛṣṇa. SB 3.25.25

This statement is also confirmed in the Third Canto, Twenty-fifth Chapter, verse 25, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, where Lord Kapila says, “My dear mother, when a person is actually in association with pure devotees, the sublime potency of My devotional service can be experienced.” In other words, when a pure devotee speaks, his words act upon the hearts of the audience. What is the secret of hearing and chanting? A professional speaker cannot impress transcendental ecstasy within the hearts of the listeners. However, when a realized soul who is engaged in the service of the Lord is speaking, he has the potency to inject spiritual life within the audience. One should, therefore, seek the association of such pure, unalloyed devotees, and by such association and service a neophyte devotee will certainly develop attachment, love and devotion for the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Bhāva arising from rāgānuga-sādhana is illustrated in the Padma Purāṇa: A young girl, having great joy in the heart and being very enthusiastic to dance, spent the whole night dancing in order to please the Lord.

In the Padma Purāṇa there is the story of a neophyte devotee who, in order to raise herself to the ecstatic platform, danced all night to invoke the Lord’s grace upon her.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya

Commentary

The word manoratham (with joy in the heart) indicates rāgānuga-sādhana. By the influence of the deity form, she developed rāga similar to that of Kṛṣṇa’s dear associates. The girl has also said previously in the same Purāṇa: bahvīṣv anyāsu nārīṣu mayy evādhika-prītiman | nṛtyaty asau mayā sārdhaṁ kaṇṭhāśleṣādi-bhāva-kṛt || Among many women, the Lord has greatest affection for me. He dances with me while embracing my neck. But though this claim is made by the young girl in the Padma Purāṇa, it is also said that Rādhā is the supreme lover of Kṛṣṇa in the Gautamīya-tantra: sattvaṁ tattvaṁ paratvaṁ ca tattva-trayam ahaṁ kila | tri-tattva-rūpiṇī sāpi rādhikā mama vallabhā | prakṛteḥ para evāhaṁ sāpi mac-chakti-rūpiṇī || I am the three principles--effect, cause, and that which transcends both cause and effect. Rādhikā, my dear lover, is also these three principles. Just as I am transcendental to matter, so is she, My energy, transcendental to matter. In the Gautamīya-tantra Kṛṣṇa also says: devī kṛṣṇa-mayī proktā rādhikā para-devatā | sarva-lakṣmī-mayī sarva-kāntiḥ sammohinī parā || Rādhikā is said to be the same as Kṛṣṇa. She is the supreme deity, representing all auspiciousness, all beauty and supreme attraction. In this way Rādhā has been described. It should be understood that the young girl mentioned in the verse must be an expansion of that celebrated Rādhā who embodies that great, eternal śakti. Rādhā decided to make the girl her sakhī when the girl reached the final stage, and by her mercy considered that the girl, achieving all perfection by that sādhana, was non-different from herself. For this reason, the Padma Purāṇa described that the young girl thought herself as the only lover of Kṛṣṇa, identifying herself as Rādhā.

Sometimes, however, it is found that without undergoing any devotional process, one all of a sudden develops devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa. This sudden development of the devotional attitude in a person must be understood as a special mercy of Kṛṣṇa or of His devotee.

Bhāva arising from Kṛṣṇa’s mercy is now considered: This mercy arises from the words of the Lord, the presence of the Lord, or just appears in the heart.

Commentary

The mercy may be produced by the words spoken by the Lord (vācika). Alternatively, the Lord may bestow mercy, producing bhāva, by showing Himself to the devotee (āloka-dāna). On the other hand, the mercy may simply manifest in the devotee’s heart (hārda). The verse starting smerāṁ bhaṅgi in the second part (BRS 1.2.239) illustrates mercy by seeing the Lord. Mercy given by Vṛndāvana and other items are included in the “mercy given by devotees.”

Commentary

Bhakti to Viṣṇu, which is the goal (upeya), has appeared without sādhana (upāyaiḥ). The conclusion is that he attained bhāva only by the mercy of the Lord, since there is no evidence of performance of any sādhana, or of obtaining the mercy of devotees. This mercy must have appeared through the heart, because he developed bhakti in the form of remembering the Lord while still in the womb. While in the womb, he did not see the Lord or receive words of blessing from the Lord. Thus, mercy manifesting in the heart could have been the only way. The Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa gives the details.

Bhāva arising from the devotee’s mercy is explained in the Seventh Canto: Who could list the innumerable transcendental qualities of Prahlāda Mahārāja? He had unflinching faith in Vāsudeva, Lord Kṛṣṇa, and unalloyed devotion to Him. His rati to Lord Kṛṣṇa was naisargikī, through mercy. Although his good qualities cannot be enumerated, they prove that he was a great soul. SB 7.4.36

As for ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa, there is a statement in the Seventh Canto, Fourth Chapter, verse 36, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, in which Nārada addresses King Yudhiṣṭhira, “My dear King, it is very difficult to describe the character of Prahlāda. He developed a natural attraction for Kṛṣṇa, and whatever I can explain about his character will simply be an arrangement of words; his actual character is impossible to describe.” This means that Nārada himself admitted that the natural development of Prahlāda’s ecstatic love was by the grace of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Favor or nisarga was granted to Prahlāda by Nārada and this created devotional impressions. Thus his rati is called naisargikī (through mercy).

This natural attraction for Kṛṣṇa on the part of Prahlāda was developed simply by the mercy of Nārada. When Prahlāda Mahārāja was within the womb of his mother, she was being sympathetically instructed by Nārada about the science of devotional service, and at the same time Nārada was wishing that the child within the womb could also take advantage of the instructions. Because Nārada, an authorized devotee and great associate of the Personality of Godhead, was desiring auspiciousness for Prahlāda Mahārāja, he developed all the characteristics of a high-grade devotee. This is called natural attraction. It is caused by the special grace of the Personality of Godhead or by the special grace of a great devotee like Nārada.

In the First Canto, tolerance of the bhāva-bhakta is illustrated as follows: O brāhmaṇas, just accept me as a completely surrendered soul, and let mother Ganges, the representative of the Lord, also accept me in that way, for I have already taken the lotus feet of the Lord into my heart. Let the snake-bird—or whatever magical thing the brāhmaṇa created—bite me at once. I only desire that you all continue singing the deeds of Lord Viṣṇu. SB 1.19.15

An example of this perseverance and reservation is found in the behavior of King Parīkṣit, as described in the First Canto, Nineteenth Chapter, verse 15, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. The King says there to all the sages present before him at the time of his death, “My dear brāhmaṇas, you should always accept me as your surrendered servant. I have come to the bank of the Ganges just to devote my heart and soul unto the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa. So please bless me, that mother Ganges may also be pleased with me. Let the curse of the brāhmaṇa’s son fall upon me—I do not mind. I only request that at the last moment of my life all of you will kindly chant the holy name of Viṣṇu, so that I may realize His transcendental qualities.” This example of Mahārāja Parīkṣit’s behavior, his remaining patient even at the last point of his life, his undisturbed condition of mind, is an example of reservation. This is one of the characteristics of a devotee who has developed ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa.

“May the brāhmaṇas accept (pratiyantu) me as a surrendered soul, since I have fixed my mind on the Lord. Gaṅgā should also accept me.” Just as the great tolerance of Parīkṣit is seen here because of his great prema, it is understood that when he had previously developed bhāva, the sprout of prema, his tolerance also had sprouted in a similar way. Other examples should be understood in the same way.

Not wasting time is illustrated in Hari-bhakti-sudhodaya: The devotees continually praise the Lord with words, remember Him with their minds, and offer respects with their bodies. Still they are not satisfied. With tears flowing from their eyes, they offer their complete lives to the Lord.

Utilization of Time An unalloyed devotee who has developed ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa is always engaging his words in reciting prayers to the Lord. Within the mind he is always thinking of Kṛṣṇa, and with his body he either offers obeisances by bowing down before the Deity or engages in some other service. During these ecstatic activities he sometimes sheds tears. In this way his whole life is engaged in the service of the Lord, with not a moment wasted on any other engagement.

Detachment is defined as follows: Detachment means “having a natural distaste for the objects of the senses.”

Detachment is illustrated in the Fifth Canto: While in the prime of life, the great Mahārāja Bharata gave up everything because he was fond of serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Uttamaśloka. He gave up his beautiful wife, nice children, great friends and an enormous empire. Although these things were very difficult to give up, Mahārāja Bharata was so exalted that he gave them up just as one gives up stool after evacuating. Such was the greatness of His Majesty. SB 5.14.43

There is a nice example of this detachment in connection with the character of King Bharata. In the Fifth Canto, Fourteenth Chapter, verse 43, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam it is stated, “Emperor Bharata was so attracted by the beauty of the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa that even in his youthful life he gave up all kinds of attachments to family, children, friends, kingdom, etc., as though they were untouchable stools.” Emperor Bharata provides a typical example of detachment. He had everything enjoyable in the material world, but he left it. This means that detachment does not mean artificially keeping oneself aloof and apart from the allurements of attachment. Even in the presence of such allurements, if one can remain unattracted by material attachments, he is called detached. In the beginning, of course, a neophyte devotee must try to keep himself apart from all kinds of alluring attachments, but the real position of a mature devotee is that even in the presence of all allurements, he is not at all attracted. This is the actual criterion of detachment.

Pridelessness is illustrated in the Padma Purāṇa: King Bhagīratha, though the crest jewel among kings, went out begging at the house of his enemies, and offered respects to the dog-eaters, because he had rati for the Lord.

In the Padma Purāṇa it is stated that King Bhagīratha was the emperor above all other kings, yet he developed such ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa that he became a mendicant and went out begging even to the homes of his political enemies and untouchables. He was so humble that he respectfully bowed down before them. There are many similar instances in the history of India. Even very recently, about two hundred years ago or less, one big landlord known as Lāl Bābu, a Calcutta landholder, became a Vaiṣṇava and lived in Vṛndāvana. He was also begging from door to door, even at the homes of his political enemies. Begging involves being ready to be insulted by persons to whose home one has come. That is natural. But one has to tolerate such insults for the sake of Kṛṣṇa. The devotee of Kṛṣṇa can accept any position in the service of Kṛṣṇa.

An example of confidence is the following statement of Sanātana Gosvāmī: I do not have prema or the practices of hearing or chanting in bhakti. I have no practice of meditation of Viṣṇu in the aṣtāṅga-yoga process, nor do I have practices of jñāna or varṇāśrama duties. I do not even have good birth to execute these actions properly. But since you are most merciful to the least qualified, O dear lover of the gopīs, though I have impure desires, my aspiration for You continues to agitate me.

In this connection, one prayer by Rūpa Gosvāmī is sufficient to exemplify this hopefulness. He says, “I have no love for Kṛṣṇa, nor for the causes of developing love of Kṛṣṇa—namely, hearing and chanting. And the process of bhakti-yoga, by which one is always thinking of Kṛṣṇa and fixing His lotus feet in the heart, is also lacking in me. As far as philosophical knowledge or pious works are concerned, I don’t see any opportunity for me to execute such activities. But above all, I am not even born of a nice family. Therefore I must simply pray to You, Gopījana-vallabha [Kṛṣṇa, maintainer and beloved of the gopīs]. I simply wish and hope that some way or other I may be able to approach Your lotus feet, and this hope is giving me pain, because I think myself quite incompetent to approach that transcendental goal of life.” The purport is that under this heading of āśā-bandha, one should continue to hope against hope that some way or other he will be able to approach the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord.

Commentary

The yoga is Vaiṣṇava-yoga. The jñānam is knowledge concerning the Lord. The śubha-karma is services performed by the devotee. Thus the meaning is “I do not perform hearing and chanting with devotion, I do not concentrate my mind on the Lord, I have no knowledge of the Lord, nor do I perform any service for the Lord. I do not have a birth suitable for serving the Lord. I have been born among the lowest people. By seeing or touching them, one must bathe for purification. My unflinching desire for You, who make Yourself readily available to the least qualified, gives me great disturbance.” It should be understood that the desire expressed in this verse is a desire only for attaining service at the level of prema arising from pure bhakti devoid of jñāna, karma or yoga, because it is supposed to be an example of āśā-bandha, confidence expressed at the stage of bhāva. Other explanations are not mentioned because they are impossible.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya

Commentary

Yoga indicates aṣṭāṅga-yoga. When meditation on Viṣṇu is prominent in that yoga, it becomes Vaiṣṇava-yoga. This meditation incorporating Viṣṇu (or other deities in meditation) is called sagarbha in the yoga system. Jñāna refers to steadiness in brahman. Śubha-karma refers, mainly, to varṇāśrama activities. Good birth is the cause of attaining qualification for the previously mentioned items of yoga, jñāna and karma. These other processes are shown as causes of attaining the Lord, only because of the accompanying performance of bhakti, which is also mentioned in the list. Concerning yoga, Kapila shows, in the Third Canto of Bhāgavatam [Note: In chapter 28, Kapila describes the process of aṣṭāṅga-yoga, with meditation on the form of the Lord.] how yoga can be combined with bhakti. The position of jñāna, in relation to bhakti, is shown in the Gītā in the verse brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā. [Note: Even to perfect jñāna or realization of brahman, a person must perform bhakti. ] (BG 18.54) Śubha-karma should also be practiced with bhakti, as illustrated by sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje—the culmination of religion is that varṇāśrama from which bhakti to the Lord arises. (SB 1.2.6) “I have a thirst (āśā) for attaining the Lord, not motivated by prema for the Lord, but by desire for my own happiness, since I have deeply rooted desires for personal enjoyment, which are difficult to remove (acchedya-mūlā). Then what should I do? I continue to hanker for You, because I think that You can turn that material desire into prema, since You are extra merciful to those who are most deficient (hīnārthādhika-sādhake).” Vyathayate is in the atmanepada form instead of the parasmaipada because of the rule aṇāv akarmakāc cittavat kartṛtvāt (Pāṇini 1.3.88). Generally causative forms are in the parasmaipada, but if the agent is non-sentient, then the causative verb takes the atmanepada. The author considers himself insentient, and this is indicated by the atmanepada form. The lack of qualification expressed in this verse is only an expression of humility (since he is actually not fallen), and thus the verse is used as an example of a person at the stage of rati.

Longing is now defined: Longing means “having intense greed for attaining service to the Lord.”

Eagerness for Achieving the Desired Success When one is sufficiently eager to achieve success in devotional service, that eagerness is called samutkaṇṭhā. This means “complete eagerness.” Actually this eagerness is the price for achieving success in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Everything has some value, and one has to pay the value before obtaining or possessing it. It is stated in the Vedic literature that to purchase the most valuable thing, Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one has to develop intense eagerness for achieving success.

An example of longing for the Lord is given in Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta (54): I long to see that young Kṛṣṇa who enchants the universe with His bent, black eye brows, with His thick eye lashes, with His attractive, shifty eyes, with His soft words which melt the heart, with his sweet, red lips, and with the intoxicating sound emanating from the clear notes of His flute.

This intense eagerness is very nicely expressed by Bilvamaṅgala Ṭhākura in his book Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta. He says, “I am eagerly waiting to see that boy of Vṛndāvana whose bodily beauty is captivating the whole universe, whose eyes are always bounded by black eyebrows and expanded like lotus petals, and who is always eagerly glancing over His devotees and therefore moving slightly here and there. His eyes are always moist, His lips are colored like copper, and through those lips there comes a sound vibration which drives one madder than a mad elephant. Attraction for Living in a Place Where Kṛṣṇa Has His Pastimes In the book Padyāvalī by Rūpa Gosvāmī there is the following statement about Vṛndāvana: “In this place the son of Mahārāja Nanda used to live with His father, who was king of all cowherd men. In this place Lord Kṛṣṇa broke the cart in which the Śakaṭāsura demon was concealed. At this place Dāmodara, who can cut the knot of our material existence, was tied up by His mother, Yaśodā.” A pure devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa resides in the district of Mathurā or Vṛndāvana and visits all the places where Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes were performed. At these sacred places Kṛṣṇa displayed His childhood activities with the cowherd boys and Mother Yaśodā. The system of circumambulating all these places is still current among devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and those coming to Mathurā and Vṛndāvana always feel transcendental pleasure. Actually, if someone goes to Vṛndāvana, he will immediately feel separation from Kṛṣṇa, who performed such nice activities when He was present there. Such attraction for remembering Kṛṣṇa’s activities is known as attachment for Kṛṣṇa.

Mathurā, here, means the whole Mathurā maṇḍala (thus including Vraja, which is described in the verse). Sometimes the word vraja-bhūvam is found replacing the word madhu-pūrim.

However, it should be said: If softness of the heart, the symptom of rati, becomes clearly visible in persons desiring liberation, or in other unqualified persons, it is not real rati.

There are impersonalist philosophers and mystics, however, who by a show of devotional service want ultimately to merge into the existence of the Supreme Lord. They sometimes try to imitate a pure devotee’s sentiment for visiting the holy places where Kṛṣṇa had His pastimes, but they simply have a view for salvation, and so their activities cannot be considered attachment.

Commentary

It has been stated that the quality of real rati is having the desire only to please the Lord. If other desires are present, it should not be considered rati, in spite of the presence of other symptoms, such as sāttvika-bhāvas. That is explained in this verse. The phrase api ca (moreover) should mean api tu (however). If the rati characterized by internal softness (melting of the heart), or what appears to be so, becomes visible in persons, such as those desiring liberation, it should not be considered real rati, because persons desiring liberation have other desires. One should not think that if a person has strong desires for things other than Kṛṣṇa, it can be called rati for that particular object (for instance rati for liberation).

How can rati appear in persons having desires for enjoyment or liberation? Those persons do not perform pure bhakti. Rati is sought out by those liberated from all desires and is not given immediately by Kṛṣṇa even to the devotees, since it is most secret.

It is said by Rūpa Gosvāmī that the attachment exhibited by pure devotees for Kṛṣṇa cannot possibly be perfected in the hearts of fruitive workers (karmīs) or mental speculators, because such attachment in pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness is very rare and not possible to achieve even for many liberated persons. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā, liberation from material contamination is the stage at which devotional service can be achieved. For a person who simply wants to have liberation and to merge into the impersonal brahma-jyoti, attachment to Kṛṣṇa is not possible to acquire. This attachment is very confidentially kept by Kṛṣṇa and is bestowed only upon pure devotees. Even ordinary devotees cannot have such pure attachment for Kṛṣṇa. Therefore, how is it possible for success to be achieved by persons whose hearts are contaminated by the actions and reactions of fruitive activities and who are entangled by various types of mental speculation?

Here the author elaborates on the reason why it is not real rati. How is it possible for rati to appear where there are desires for material enjoyment or liberation? There is a fault in their sādhana: they do not perform pure bhakti. Pure bhakti means that it should not be mixed with jñāna, karma or other unacceptable elements.

There are many so-called devotees who artificially think of Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes known as aṣṭa-kālīya-līlā. Sometimes one may artificially imitate these, pretending that Kṛṣṇa is talking with him in the form of a boy, or else one may pretend that Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa both have come to him and are talking with him. Such characteristics are sometimes exhibited by the impersonalist class of men, and they may captivate some innocent persons who have no knowledge in the science of devotional service. However, as soon as an experienced devotee sees all of these caricatures, he can immediately evaluate such rascaldom. If such a pretender is sometimes seen possessing imitative attachment to Kṛṣṇa, that will not be accepted as real attachment. Pratibimba or reflection is described as follows: When there are apparent qualities of rati, accompanied by desires for enjoyment and liberation, it is called the pratibimba (reflection) raty-ābhāsa. This pratibimba raty-ābhāsa awards the goals of enjoyment and liberation to those persons without their having to exert effort.

If someone, without undergoing the regulative principles of devotional service or without being guided by a bona fide spiritual master, shows such imitative attachment, this is called shadow attachment.

Bhakti-sāra-pradarśinī
Commentary

Rati-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitaḥ means the person has the symptoms of rati. From the presence of one or two symptoms such as tears, the condition has the appearance of bhāva but it is actually raty-ābhāsa, a resemblance to rati. If this raty-ābhāsa has desires for the happiness of material enjoyment or liberation, then it is called pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa. This condition easily bestows the desired goals of liberation, without having to control the senses and mind, and without other practices necessary to achieve liberation. Awarding those goals of enjoyment and liberation without the sādhaka’s exertion shows the powers of pratibimba raty-ābhāsa.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Durgama-saṅgamanī
Commentary

Rati without motivations for material enjoyment or liberation yields the main form of rati, whereas having attachments produces a semblance of rati. This semblance arises through secondary conditions. According to the conditions, there are two types of semblance. The first type is described here. The qualities of rati appear (rati-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitaḥ) in the form of a few tears or other symptoms. Though this seems to indicate a touch of rati, when the symptoms appear along with desires for enjoyment or liberation, it is called pratibimba. The type of rati for the Lord which is contaminated by desires for enjoyment or liberation is called pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa. This pratibimba awards liberation without extreme efforts because of two qualities existing in the Lord—His power to bestow material enjoyment and His power to bestow liberation. This is the extraordinary power of pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa.

The process by which pratibimba appears is described in this verse. Those who are attached to enjoyment and liberation, through occasional rather than constant association with devotees (daivāt), imitate devotional activities, such as chanting, but with their own goals in mind, and they achieve a general tranquility of mind. But their hearts are still contaminated with those desires, since they have not realized the fault of such desires. The devotee’s heart is like the sky, which is untouched by other objects, and is thus suitable for the rising of the moon of prema. The reflection of that moon situated in the devotee’s heart—not the moon itself—appears within the heart of such contaminated persons. A reflection appears because of the impositions (upādhi) caused by other desires. Thus, that reflection is not exactly the same as the original, since it takes support from only a few qualities of the original rati and is a blurred image possessing contamination of other desires. A desire for pure bhāva on the other hand produces a complete and pure reflection, because the aspirant takes support of a host of wonderful qualities of bhāva and makes efforts for the correct goal. When that person with other desires becomes separated from the devotee, will that reflection disappear? No, by the impressions it leaves in his heart, the reflection of bhāva remains there for some time.

Commentary

Here the word chāyā means beauty or splendor. The Amara-kośa, Nānārtha-varga, gives synonyms: chāyā sūrya-priyā kāntiḥ pratibimbam anātapaḥ: chāyā means the wife of the sun, splendor, reflection, and shade. Here it also means a reflection of or resemblance to beauty. This verse describes this chāyā-raty-ābhāsa, taking into account the meaning of chāyā as “resemblance to beauty” in combination with the word ābhāsa. Little interest (kṣudra-kautūhala) means that though the Lord and bhakti are spiritual, the person has interest in them only as material objects. Because there is curiosity relating to the Lord, even though material, there is an appearance of a little splendor (kānti). That is the meaning of chāyā here. Because of the slight attraction to the Lord, there will be slight symptoms similar to those of real rati. However, because of its nature as chāyā, it is also unsteady (cañcalā), unlike the pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa. In pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa, the attraction to material enjoyment and liberation is very strong, but in chāyā-raty-ābhāsa, the material curiosity about the Lord is transient. Still, because of the influence of the Lord in chāyā-raty-ābhāsa, there is gradually a destruction of the suffering of material existence. One should not say “This type does not fit within the general category of raty-ābhāsa because it lacks desire for enjoyment and liberation.” It is classed as raty-ābhāsa because material curiosity is a form of enjoyment as well (a contamination). As well, it does not overlap with pratibimba-raty-ābhāsa, though both types have desire for enjoyment, because chāyā is connected with only a curiosity about the Lord (whereas pratibimba has a strong commitment to material enjoyment or liberation).

Commentary

There should be simultaneous participation in the items listed (performing actions dear to the Lord, observing the festivals of the Lord, residing in the dhāma of the Lord, and associating with the devotees of the Lord) in order for chāyā-raty-ābhāsa to manifest in ignorant people.

By the great mercy of a dear devotee of the Lord, the semblance of bhāva suddenly becomes real bhāva. By offending that devotee, even the best bhāvābhāsa gradually wanes just as the full moon in the sky gradually wanes.

The conclusion is that transcendental attachment is so powerful that if such attachment is seen manifested even in some common man, by the association of a pure devotee it can bring one to the perfectional stage. But such attachment for Kṛṣṇa cannot be invoked in a person without his being sufficiently blessed by the association of pure devotees. As attachment can be invoked by the association of pure devotees, so attachment can also be extinguished by offenses committed at the lotus feet of pure devotees. To be more clear, by the association of pure devotees attachment for Kṛṣṇa can be aroused, but if one commits offenses at the lotus feet of a devotee, one’s shadow attachment or parā attachment can be extinguished. This extinguishing is like the waning of the full moon, which gradually decreases and at last becomes dark. One should therefore be very careful while associating with pure devotees to guard against committing an offense at their lotus feet.

Moreover, it should be stated: By an offense against the dearest devotee of the Lord, even real bhāva will be destroyed, if the offense is grave. If the offense is medium, the bhāva will turn to bhāvābhāsa. If the offense is slight, the bhāva will become an inferior type.

Transcendental attachment, either shadow or parā, can be nullified by different degrees of offenses at the lotus feet of pure devotees. If the offense is very serious, then one’s attachment becomes almost nil, and if the offense is not very serious, one’s attachment can become second class or third class.

Commentary

Bhāva will be destroyed by aparādha to the dearest devotees of Kṛṣṇa. An example is Dvivida the monkey, a follower of Rāma. By aparādha to Lakṣmaṇa, his bhāva disappeared. By medium aparādha, bhāva becomes bhāvābhāsa. If the aparādha is slight, the bhāva changes type. Madhura-rati becomes dāsya-rati. Dāsya-rati becomes śānta-rati.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Durgama-saṅgamanī
Commentary

By two types of grave offenses—offense to the dearest devotee, or to Kṛṣṇa Himself (kṛṣṇa-pṛeṣṭha aparādhataḥ)—even real bhāva is destroyed. By medium offense, bhāva becomes bhāvābhāsa. By slight offense, the bhāva degrades in category. Becoming an inferior type means that there will be degradation in term of the five rasas and the eight stages from mahā-bhāva to rati. [Note: Sādhya-rūpa or hārda-rūpa-bhakti has five types: bhāva, prema, praṇaya, sneha and rāga. In Ujjvala-nīla-maṇi three more types are mentioned: māna, anurāga and mahā-bhāva. Thus, there are eight types of sādhya-bhakti. This is explained in Jīva Gosvāmī’s commentary on BRS 1.2.1. However, since the topic is bhāva-bhakti, the lowest of the eight types, that bhāva could simply decrease in intensity. Furthermore, those at the level of bhāva still have impurities, and could make mistakes because of anarthas, whereas those at the level of prema are pure and could never commit real offense.] Thus, change in bhāva will take place according to the seriousness of the offense.

By intimate association with a person who strongly desires impersonal liberation, real bhāva becomes bhāvābhāsa, or becomes worship of the self as the Lord.

If someone becomes attached to the principles of salvation or to merging into the existence of the brahma-jyoti, his ecstasies gradually diminish into shadow and parā attachment or else transform into the principles of ahaṅgrahopāsanā. This ahaṅgrahopāsanā describes a living entity when he begins spiritual realization by identifying himself with the Supreme Lord. This state of self-realization is technically known as monism. The monist thinks himself one with the Supreme Lord. Thus, because he does not differentiate between himself and the Supreme Lord, it is his view that by worshiping himself he is worshiping the supreme whole.

Commentary

By intimate association with a person desiring liberation, who is fixed in that philosophy and who uses logic from jñāna scriptures which establish the superiority of liberation over everything else (supratiṣṭhite), real bhāva becomes bhāvābhāsa. Alternatively, he identifies himself with the Lord who is worthy of worship. This becomes self-worship.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Durgama-saṅgamanī
Commentary

Bhajanīyeśa-bhāvatām means identifying oneself as the Lord, who is the actual object of worship. Bhāva for the Lord becomes ahaṅgrahopāsanām, worship of the self.

It is seen sometimes that new devotees, absorbed in the goals of different types of liberation, identify themselves with the Lord momentarily, during dancing or other acts of devotion.

Sometimes it is found that a neophyte is taking part in chanting and dancing very enthusiastically, but within himself he is under the impression that he has become one with the supreme whole. This conception of monism is completely different from pure, transcendental devotional service.

Bhāva sometimes appears suddenly in a person without performance of sādhana or mercy, and without scriptural knowledge. It should be inferred that, in a previous life, some obstacle interrupted that person’s skillful sādhana, and in this life the obstacle has finally been removed.

If, however, it is seen that a person has developed a high standard of devotion without having undergone even the regulative principles, it is to be understood that his status of devotional service was achieved in a former life. For some reason or another it had been temporarily stopped, most probably by an offense committed at the lotus feet of a devotee. Now, with a good second chance, it has again begun to develop. The conclusion is that steady progress in devotional service can be attained only in the association of pure devotees.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Durgama-saṅgamanī
Commentary

Sādhana refers to all the causes of bhāva: sādhana-bhakti, the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and the mercy of the devotee. Īkṣā refers to the knowledge gained through scriptures. Sometimes, bhāva appears suddenly without knowledge of scriptures, and without sādhana, mercy of Kṛṣṇa or mercy of the devotee. It is seen and verified to be real bhāva (īkṣyate). One should then infer sādhana from a previous life, as in the case of Vṛtrāsura and others.

If some apparent fault is seen in a person who has developed real bhāva, one should not be hostile to him, because he has accomplished the goal in all respects.

If a person is completely detached from material enjoyment and has developed pure ecstatic devotion, even if he is sometimes accidentally found not living up to the standard of devotional service, one should not be envious of him. It is confirmed also in Bhagavad-gītā that a devotee who has unflinching faith in and devotion to the Lord, even if sometimes found to be accidentally deviated from pure devotional characteristics, should still be counted among the pure. Unflinching faith in devotional service, in Lord Kṛṣṇa and in the spiritual master makes one highly elevated in the activities of devotional service.

There may be some external bad conduct (vaiguṇyam), but one should not be hostile to him, because by having bhāva the person cannot be contaminated by those external actions. However, even if he makes mistakes, because of his level of advancement, Kṛṣṇa takes care of him.] Thus, it is said: apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato ’pi vā yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyantara-śuciḥ Whether one is pure or contaminated, and regardless of one’s external situation, simply, by remembering the lotus-eyed Personality of Godhead, one can cleanse one’s internal and external existence. Thus, it is said in the Narasiṁha Purāṇa: A person who is dedicated completely to the Lord may show, externally, serious contamination (but internally he is pure). The full moon, though marked by the figure of a rabbit, is never overcome by darkness.

In the Nṛsiṁha Purāṇa it is stated, “If a person has completely engaged his mind, body and activities in the service of the Supreme Godhead, but externally he is found to be engaged in some abominable activities, these abominable activities will surely be very quickly vanquished by the influence of his staunch devotional force.” The example is given that on the full moon there are some spots which may appear to be pockmarks. Still, the illumination spread by the full moon cannot be checked. Similarly, a little fault in the midst of volumes of devotional service is not at all to be counted as a fault. A person may show serious contamination. This means that it is seen externally that he performs forbidden activities. Rati is naturally and eternally unstable because of its continuous, ever-increasing desires for pleasing the Lord and it is full of bliss. Manifesting this instability in the form of a variety of sañcāri-bhāvas, it is tastier than millions of moons.

Rati is described as unstable by nature (uṣṇa) due to ever-increasing desire for the Lord, and this state is without beginning, or continuous (aniśa).
