From Fear: I said to your servant Patrī, “Give me that flute kept with you.” Hearing my words, the careless Patrī suddenly changed color, and his voice choked up. O Mukunda! Because of his inattention, Your flute has been lost.

There are also examples of faltering of the voice caused by fearfulness. One of Kṛṣṇa’s friends praised Him thus: “My dear friend, Your flute was given to Your servant Patrī, and when I asked him to return it he began speaking in a faltering voice, and his complexion became yellow.”

Commentary

Patrī is the name of one of Kṛṣṇa’s servant as is Raktaka. The formation of udīrṇa is explained as follows. It is formed from the verb ṝ with the prefix ut. In forming a past participle of verbs of the ninth class (kryādi) and verbs ending in ṛ or ṝ the particle na is added at the end instead of ta. The ṝ changes to ir and this is changed to īr because a consonant immediately follows. Haritah (stolen) implies that the flute had disappeared because of his inattention.
