From sorrow: Seeing before them that Kṛṣṇa was entering the stomach of Aghāsura, who was the brother of Bakāsura, the devatās in the sky, overcome with sorrow, became clearly like painted pictures.

Astonishment caused by lamentation was exemplified when Kṛṣṇa was entering into the belly of the Aghāsura demon and all the demigods from higher planets became stunned with lamentation.

Commentary

Citrapaṭāyate means that the host of devatās (diviṣan-nikaraḥ) became like paintings. Another version of the verse has citratatīyate.
