Location
Open in Google MapsThe Tirumayanam Brahmapureeswarar Temple, a few kilometers east of the better-known Amirthaghateswarar-Abirami Temple at Thirukadaiyur, is a lesser-known Paadal Petra Sthalam glorified by all three principal Nayanar saints — Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar. Shiva is worshipped here as Brahmapureeswarar, alongside his consort Malarkuzhal Minnammai. Inscriptions referencing the historical Chola territorial division “Jayamkonda Cholavalanattu” point to origins within the Chola period, with later Vijayanagara-era inscriptions recording the deity’s present name.
The temple’s surviving Chola-era carvings include niche images of Vishnu (as Thirumal), Bhikshadanar, Durga, Lingodhbhava, Gangadhara, and Ganapathy, along with a sculpture believed to depict a Chola king, possibly Kulothunga III, in a posture of worship. A bronze image of Murugan as Singaravelar, flanked by his consorts Valli and Devasena, occupies the main sanctum alongside the presiding Shiva shrine, and the grounds include a stepped well known as Aswathi Kinaru.
