About Sanatana Kshetras

Sanatana Kshetras is a comprehensive, git-based directory of Hindu / Sanatana Dharma temples across India and the globe โ€” built so pilgrims can plan a visit, and so podcasters, monks, and researchers have a well-sourced starting point for a story.

Verified vs. pending

Of 860 temples, 441 are marked verified โ€” corroborated by at least one independently checkable source โ€” and 419 are markedpending, meaning something about the entry (a date, a founding legend, a precise location) could not yet be independently confirmed. Pending doesn't mean wrong; it means honest about what's still uncertain. Every entry with unresolved questions carries explicit review flags describing exactly what's unconfirmed, rather than smoothing the uncertainty over.

Documented history vs. oral tradition

Every entry marks its history as documented (independently attested),legend (oral or scriptural tradition, not independently verifiable), ormixed โ€” and every source is cited by type: scripture, oral tradition, or historical record.

The data is public and versioned

Nothing here lives in a private database. Every temple is a Markdown file in a public GitHub repository, validated against a published schema, with its full edit history visible. See Contribute for how to add or correct an entry.
