The Thyagaraja Temple at Tiruvottiyur, in northern Chennai, is a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised by all three of the Tevaram’s principal Nayanar poet-saints — Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar. Shiva is worshipped here as Aadhipureeswarar, unusually represented as a mud mound whose ceremonial armour is removed only once a year, on the full moon of the Tamil month Karthigai; the same form is also known locally as Thiyagaraja Swamy or Tiruvottrieswarar. His consort is worshipped as Vadivudaiamman, also called Tripurasundari. The temple’s origins are traced to the 7th-century Pallava period, with substantial expansion under the Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I in the 11th century.

Now absorbed into the dense urban fabric of northern Chennai, the temple retains its seven-tiered gopuram and twin sacred tanks, Brahma Theertham and Adisesha Theertham. Its festival calendar is one of the busiest among the temples in this directory, spanning the Maasi Brahmotsavam, Vasantha Urchavam, Shivarathri, Thai Poosam, Navarathri, Skandashashti, and Arudhra Darshan.

Sources

  • scripture: Tevaram — 7th-9th century Tamil Shaiva canon; all three of the Tevaram Moovar (Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar) rendered hymns at this temple, giving it Paadal Petra Sthalam status.
  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvottiyur article: confirms the presiding deity, worshipped as Aadhipureeswarar (represented as a mud mound whose armour is ceremonially removed on the Karthigai full moon) and also known as Thiyagaraja Swamy or Tiruvottrieswarar, alongside consort Vadivudaiamman, also called Tripurasundari; origins traced to the 7th-century Pallava period with significant expansion under the 11th-century Chola king Rajendra Chola I; a seven-tiered gopuram; and temple tanks named Brahma Theertham and Adisesha Theertham.
