The Sauriraja Perumal Temple at Thirukkannapuram, in the fertile Chola Nadu region, is among the most exalted of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred abodes of Sriman Narayana glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. The presiding deity, the Moolavar, is worshipped here as Sauriraja Perumal, also revered by devotees with the affectionate name Neelamega Perumal for the dark, rain-cloud beauty of His form. The very name Thirukkannapuram, the holy town of the dark-hued Lord, evokes His captivating presence, and tradition cherishes this kshetra as one where the Lord stands in surpassing splendour. The singular distinction of this Divya Desam is that it was sung by no fewer than five of the Alwar saints whose hymns make up the Prabandham: Nammalwar, the foremost of the Alwars; Kulasekara Alwar, the royal devotee; Periyalwar; his foster-daughter Andal, the bridal saint; and Thirumangai Alwar, who lavished many verses upon the shrines of the Chola land. To be celebrated by this great company of saints marks Thirukkannapuram as a place of extraordinary sanctity, for few among the Divya Desams received the praise of so many Alwars. Through their paasurams the form, grace, and majesty of Sauriraja Perumal were woven permanently into the four thousand sacred Tamil hymns recited in the daily liturgy of the Srivaishnava tradition. Pilgrims hold that worship here, accompanied by the recitation of these verses, brings the Lord’s abounding grace, and Thirukkannapuram endures as one of the deeply venerated abodes of the Chola country, radiant with the devotion of the Alwars who sang its glory.

Festivals

Thirukkannapuram, the abode of Lord Sauriraja Perumal, is among the more celebrated of the Chola Nadu Divya Desams and keeps a rich festival calendar. The annual Brahmotsavam is observed on a grand scale, with the utsava murti processioned on the Garuda, Hanumantha and other vahanas through the temple streets. Vaikunta Ekadasi is kept with great solemnity, the Paramapada Vasal opened and the Pagal-pathu and Ra-pathu recitations of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham conducted before the Lord. Pavithrotsavam and a Float festival (Theppotsavam) on the sacred tank are traditionally held, along with the Tamil festival days and Pongal. The Alvar tirunakshatram observances honouring the saints who sang of this kshetra are also celebrated devoutly.

  • historical record: Temple identity, place name, region classification, coordinates, and Alvar attribution sourced from the 108divyadesam.org dataset (extracted from the published Tamil temple-guide app com.coderays.divyadesam).
  • historical record: History, festival-calendar, and access narrative adapted from the 108divyadesam.org project's temple-extras dataset (AI-generated, auto-review status, not yet independently verified).
  • historical record: Re-verification pass (2026): Wikipedia's village article (fetched under the spelling 'Thirukannapuram') confirms the local Vaishnavite shrine is called 'Neelamegha Perumal Temple,' corroborating this entry's own note that the deity is affectionately called Neelamega Perumal, and confirms a specific dated festival, Masi Magam, held in the Tamil month of Masi (mid-February to mid-March). It also notes a separate Shiva Paadal Petra Sthalam, the Ramanadheeswarar Temple, in the same village. Wikipedia's 'Divya Desam' list article gives the consort as Kannapura Nayaki and classifies the shrine among the five Panchakanna Kshetrams (Krishna-linked Divya Desams).

For review

  • Construction period, dynasty, inscriptions, and architectural detail remain unconfirmed for this temple; the 5-Alwar hymn attribution already in this entry was not independently re-confirmed this pass, though it is plausible and commonly cited.
