Thiruindalur, in the fertile Chola Nadu country, is home to the Divya Desam where the Lord is worshipped as Parimala Ranganathar, the fragrant Ranganatha, reclining in the serene majesty that recalls the great Ranganatha of Srirangam. As one of the 108 Divya Desams, this shrine holds an honoured place in the sacred geography of Sri Vaishnavism. The name Parimala, meaning fragrance, points to the tradition that the Moolavar here is suffused with a divine sweetness of presence, and the Lord is beloved as a form of perfumed grace. According to the sthala purana, this is a kshetra associated with Indra, the king of the celestials, whose worship of Vishnu here is reflected in the very name Indalur; tradition holds that the Lord granted His darshan to Indra and other divine beings at this spot. Thirumangai Alwar, foremost among the Alwars in the number of Divya Desams he celebrated, sang the praises of this temple in his hymns preserved in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, the four-thousand-verse anthology of the Tamil poet-saints. There is a cherished tradition that the Alwar pleaded with the Lord here for darshan, and the Lord responded by turning toward His devotee, an episode lovingly remembered in the temple’s lore. Through the saint’s sacred verses, Thiruindalur was hallowed and enshrined among the Divya Desams, and to this day devotees gather to behold Parimala Ranganathar and to drink in the fragrance of his abiding compassion.

Festivals

Thiruindalur, where the Lord is worshipped as Parimala Ranganathar, traditionally observes the principal Srivaishnava festivals through the year. The annual Brahmotsavam is the chief celebration, with the utsava murti taken in procession on various vahanas amid recitation of the Divya Prabandham and Vedic chanting. Vaikunta Ekadasi is kept with particular reverence, devotees gathering for the sacred fast and darshan of the Lord. Pavithrotsavam for ritual purification and, where conducted, a Float festival add to the devotional calendar. The temple, associated in tradition with the moon’s worship of the Lord, also keeps Sri Jayanthi, Navaratri, the Tamil and English New Year, and Pongal, when special abhishekams and alankarams draw devotees from the Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam areas.

Location & Access

Parimala Ranganathar Temple lies at Thiruindalur near Mayiladuthurai in the Chola Nadu region of the Kaveri delta, within Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district. Mayiladuthurai is the closest town and transport point, well served by rail and road, with Nagapattinam and the wider delta forming the nearest major hubs. As with most Vishnu temples, darshan is generally available during morning and evening hours, with a midday closure. Verify current darshan timings and travel details with the temple or official sources before visiting.

  • historical record: Temple identity, place name, region classification, coordinates, and Alvar attribution sourced from the 108divyadesam.org dataset (extracted from the published Tamil temple-guide app com.coderays.divyadesam).
  • historical record: History, festival-calendar, and access narrative adapted from the 108divyadesam.org project's temple-extras dataset (AI-generated, auto-review status, not yet independently verified).
  • historical record: Re-verification pass (2026): a Wikipedia article titled 'Indalur' was checked and found to describe a different, unrelated village of the same name in Thanjavur taluk, Thanjavur district -- not this Thiruindalur near Mayiladuthurai -- and was NOT used as a source here. No dedicated article for this temple was found. Wikipedia's 'Divya Desam' list article gives the consort name as Parimala Ranganayaki (paired with Sri Parimala Ranganatha Perumal) and confirms the Mayiladuthurai-district location.
