Suriname’s Surya Mandir — named for Surya, the Vedic sun deity — was established in 1984 by the Surya Mandir Foundation on a plot in Paramaribo previously occupied by a Christian congregation known as LOGOS. Since its founding the building has been repeatedly expanded and modified while remaining in continuous use, reflecting the gradual, community-funded growth typical of many diaspora Hindu institutions in Suriname.

Today the mandir functions both as an active place of worship and as a venue for religious lectures and instruction, serving Paramaribo’s Hindustani Hindu community. Beyond its founding year and site history, detailed institutional records (founders, architecture, presiding-deity confirmation) were not available in the sources checked this pass.

Sources

  • historical record: Sourced from Dutch Wikipedia's 'Surya Mandir' article (found via the 'Hinduism in Suriname' category listing): confirms the Surya Mandir Foundation was established in 1984 on a Paramaribo site previously used by a Christian congregation (LOGOS), that the building has been continuously expanded since, and that it currently functions as both a place of worship and a venue for community lectures. This is the only source located this pass; it could not be independently cross-checked against a second source, and no founders' names, presiding-deity confirmation beyond the temple's name, or additional history were found.
  • historical record: Coordinates added this pass via OpenStreetMap/Nominatim geocoding of the Zinniastraat/Verlengde Gemenelandsweg intersection named in this entry's how_to_reach field (approximately 5.825, -55.181); this is a street-intersection-level approximation, not building-exact, since no dedicated POI for the temple itself was found in OpenStreetMap.

For review

  • Sourced from a single Dutch-language Wikipedia article, not independently cross-checked against a second source this pass; the founders' names and full institutional history are not confirmed, and it is not certain whether Surya is the sole deity enshrined or the temple (as is common for Sanatan Dharma mandirs in Suriname) also houses additional murtis.
