Location
Open in Google MapsSugandha Temple, in Shikarpur village north of Barisal city in southern Bangladesh, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and one of relatively few sites in the tradition located outside India proper. Tradition holds that when Shiva carried Sati’s dismembered body in grief, her nose fell at this spot; the goddess’s name, Sugandha, meaning “fragrant,” is understood locally as a reference to that association with the nose. She is also known here as Sunanda, and the temple complex separately honors the associated Bhairava, or Kalabhairava, alongside the Devi shrine itself.
Little dated history survives for the structure in the sources checked — no founder, patron, or construction date is recorded — so the temple’s significance rests almost entirely on its standing within the wider Shakti Peetha pilgrimage tradition of the Bengal region, a tradition that itself long predates the 1947 partition that placed Barisal within present-day Bangladesh. The temple’s principal annual observance is Shiva Chaturdashi, on the fourteenth day of the dark lunar fortnight, when the site draws its largest gathering of devotees from both Bangladesh and the wider Bengali Shakta pilgrimage circuit.
Sources
- historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's Sugandha Shaktipeeth article: confirms location in Shikarpur village, about 10 miles north of Barisal city (Gournadi upazila, Barisal district, Bangladesh); confirms the goddess is also known as Sunanda, and that the shrine includes separate worship of Shakti and the associated Bhairava (Kalabhairava); confirms Shiva Chaturdashi as the temple's main festival. No founding date, patron, or architectural history is given.
- oral tradition: The belief that Sati's nose fell here, consecrating it as a Shakti Peetha and giving the goddess her name Sugandha ('fragrant,' referencing the nose), is Puranic/devotional tradition rather than independently datable history.
