Location
Open in Google MapsFounded by the Sri Meenakshi Temple Society in 1977, with land acquired over the following two years, this temple near Pearland, Texas is often cited as the third-oldest Hindu temple in the United States and, notably, the only temple outside India dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi โ built as a deliberate replica of the great Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Designed by Indian temple architect S. M. Ganapathy Sthapathi in South Indian Dravidian style and constructed of white granite, its main shrine received its inaugural Mahakumbhabhishekam consecration ceremony in 1982. The primary sanctum honors Meenakshi alongside Sundareswarar (a form of Shiva) and, distinctively for a Meenakshi temple, Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu) and Lakshmi, with further shrines to Ganesha, Murugan, Rama, Durga, and other deities, making it a significant pilgrimage and cultural anchor for the Tamil and broader South Indian community around Houston.
