Location
Open in Google MapsOne of only a handful of temples in India where Hanuman is depicted in a reclining (sleeping) posture rather than standing or seated โ the others most often cited are at the Prayagraj Sangam and Jam Sawali in Madhya Pradesh โ Bhadra Maruti is explained in local legend as marking the spot where Hanuman, entranced by the devotional songs of King Bhadrasena (a devotee of Rama, in an area then called Bhadravati), unknowingly settled into repose; an alternate tradition instead credits the 17th-century saint Samarth Ramdas with discovering the image in this form. The original deity was preserved by devotees through a period of destruction under Mughal rule and reinstalled in a rebuilt marble temple on the original site in the 1960s. The reclining posture is understood in local tradition as reflecting bhava-samadhi, a state of yogic absorption.
