Location
Open in Google MapsThe most important temple for Goa’s Hindu community and Kuldevi (family deity) of many Goud Saraswat Brahmin families, Shanta Durga was originally enshrined at Quelossim (Keloshi) in Salcete until Portuguese colonial authorities destroyed that temple in 1566 as part of a broader campaign against Hindu worship in areas under their control; the deity was carried inland to safety and eventually re-established at Kavalem, then outside Portuguese territory. The present temple was built in the 1730s under Maratha-era patronage, with the village of Kavalem itself bequeathed to the temple by the Peshwa Baji Rao I in 1738; the site marked 450 years of continuous worship in December 2016. Theologically, Shantadurga is depicted holding serpents representing Vishnu and Shiva, embodying reconciliation between the two traditions.
