A modern addition to Mauritius’s Hindu temple landscape, Sagar Shiv Mandir was established in 2007 on Rue Labourdonnais at Goyave de Chine on the coast of Poste de Flacq, funded substantially by donor Vikash Gunowa, whose donation Wikipedia puts at approximately Rs 274,505,000; a further, smaller donation of about Rs 150,300 came from another Gunowa family member, Dhanvin Gunowa, in 2023. Its most striking feature is a 108-foot bronze-coloured statue of Shiva overlooking the lagoon and surrounding mangroves, a setting that has drawn comparisons to Trinidad and Tobago’s well-known “Temple in the Sea.” The temple serves as a place of worship for Mauritius’s Hindu community as well as a popular stop for tourists touring the island’s east coast.

Sources

  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's 'Sagar Shiv Mandir' article: confirms a 2007 founding funded by donor Vikash Gunowa, a 108-foot bronze-coloured Shiva statue at the site, its coastal/lagoon setting at Goyave de Chine, and its description as ranking among Mauritius's most-visited Hindu temples ('one of the top three Hindu temples to see on the island'), architecturally comparable to Trinidad and Tobago's Temple in the Sea. Wikipedia also records a specific donation figure (approximately Rs 274,505,000 from Vikash Gunowa) and a further, smaller 2023 donation of approximately Rs 150,300 from another Gunowa family member, Dhanvin Gunowa.
  • historical record: Re-verified on a later pass: coordinates and street address (Rue Labourdonnais, Goyave de Chine, Poste de Flacq) obtained from OpenStreetMap/Nominatim, independent of Wikipedia (which has no infobox coordinates for this temple).

For review

  • The claim that this temple ranks 'among the top three' Hindu temples in Mauritius, and the precise donation figures (including the 2023 Dhanvin Gunowa donation) cited on Wikipedia, were not independently cross-checked against a second source this pass; Wikidata carries no independent coordinate or date property for this temple that could serve as a cross-check.
