Renuka Lake, in the lower Shivalik hills of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, is a curving natural lake whose outline is popularly said to trace the form of a reclining woman — identified by tradition as the goddess Renuka, mother of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. Local legend holds that after the death of her husband, the sage Jamadagni, Renuka gave up her own life at this spot, and that the lake itself came to embody her; this is a distinctly regional telling, separate from the better-known Puranic account in which Parashurama beheads Renuka at his father’s command and later restores her to life. Temples to both Renuka and Parashurama stand at the water’s edge, and the lake was formally recognized for its ecological significance as a Ramsar wetland site in 2005.

The site’s largest gathering, the annual Renuka Fair, unfolds around Prabodhini Ekadashi in November, when a palanquin bearing Parashurama’s image is carried in procession — the Shobha Yatra — from a nearby temple to the lake on the day before the main fair, re-enacting his reunion with his mother before large crowds of pilgrims and visitors gather for the main day’s ceremonies.

Sources

  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's Renuka Lake article: confirms the lake, at about 672 m elevation in Sirmaur district, is shaped roughly like a reclining woman and is traditionally identified with the goddess Renuka; confirms temples to Renuka Ji and to her son Parashurama stand at the lake; confirms the lake was designated a Ramsar wetland site on 8 November 2005; confirms the annual Renuka Fair is held around Prabodhini Ekadashi in November, beginning the preceding day (dashami) with a palanquin procession (Shobha Yatra) bringing Parashurama's image to the lake, commemorating his reunion with his mother.
  • oral tradition: Local legend holds that after her husband, the sage Jamadagni, died, Renuka gave up her life at this spot and the lake itself took on her form; this account differs from the classical Puranic narrative of Renuka (in which Parashurama beheads her on Jamadagni's order and later revives her) and should be understood as a distinct, site-specific oral tradition rather than a retelling of the Puranic episode.

For review

  • The local Sirmaur legend of Renuka's death by drowning at this lake differs from the widely known Puranic account of her story (beheading and revival by Parashurama); no source checked reconciles the two, so both should be treated as separate devotional traditions rather than a single confirmed narrative.
  • This site (Renuka Ji Temple, Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh) is distinct from the separately documented Renuka Devi Temple at Mahur, Maharashtra, which honors the same goddess under a different regional tradition; the two should not be treated as duplicates.
