New Vraja Mandala, known in Spanish as Nueva Vrajamandala, is a rural ISKCON farm settlement built on the Santa Clara estate in a pine forest beside the Tajuña river, near the town of Brihuega in Guadalajara province, inland Castilla-La Mancha. It has functioned as the principal Spanish headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness since 1979, with a formal founding date of 1983 recorded in some references; as with New Mayapur in France and New Vrindaban in the United States, it follows ISKCON’s broader pattern of establishing self-sufficient rural devotee communities combining temple worship, farming, and cow protection, modeled on the villages of Krishna’s Vraja (Vrindavana) region in India, from which its name is drawn.

By 2009 the settlement had grown to around 64 residents, functioning as a combined temple, residential community, and administrative center for ISKCON’s activities across Spain. Like its sister communities elsewhere in Europe, it operates under the spiritual guidance established by ISKCON founder A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and continues to host devotees, festivals, and visitors at its hillside location roughly 90 km northeast of Madrid.

Sources

  • historical record: Cross-checked against the Spanish Wikipedia article 'Nueva Vrajamandala': confirms it as a settlement, temple, and the principal Spanish headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, located on the Santa Clara estate in a pine forest beside the Tajuña river near Brihuega (Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha), at roughly 810 m altitude; the article states it has served as ISKCON's main Spanish base since 1979, gives 1983 as a formal founding/registration year, and records a 2009 resident population of 64. Cross-checked further against the English Wikipedia 'ISKCON' article, which lists 'Nueva Vrajamandala in Spain' among ISKCON's international centers.
  • historical record: Wave 2 follow-up: coordinates independently re-confirmed against the Spanish Wikipedia infobox for 'Nueva Vrajamandala' (40 deg 43'24"N 2 deg 52'51"O = 40.7234, -2.8809), which matches the previously recorded coordinates to the fourth decimal place - the Brihuega-area location (correcting an earlier, since-abandoned working assumption that placed it near Gandia) is now confirmed independently rather than merely re-asserted. The same source, citing a HareKrishna.es article marking the community's 25th anniversary (dated 13 August 2008), corroborates the 1983 settlement-establishment date. An official site was located at nuevavrajamandala.es, though its homepage yielded only the site title with no further body content retrievable this pass.

For review

  • Sources give two different founding-related years — 1979 (when it became ISKCON's Spanish headquarters) and 1983 (a formal founding/registration date, corroborated by a 25th-anniversary article dated 2008) — without fully reconciling them; both are reported here rather than picking one.
  • The specific name/form of the deity installed at the temple was not stated explicitly in any source checked; 'Radha Krishna' reflects standard ISKCON (Gaudiya Vaishnava) temple practice rather than a site-specific confirmation. Named founders and current darshan/visiting hours also remain unconfirmed.
