Founded in 1984 by Swami Yogananda Giri — born Paolo Valle in Italy — Matha Gitananda Ashram sits on a hillside roughly 520 meters up at Località Pellegrino, near the small town of Altare in Liguria’s Savona province. The resident community follows a Sanatana Dharma path shaped by two distinct streams: Saiva Siddhanta, centered on Shiva, and Srividya, the tantric worship of the Goddess as Tripurasundari. A South Indian-style temple on the grounds hosts daily puja and scripture recitation, and the ashram is home to a monastic community of sannyasins and brahmacharins living under Swami Yogananda Giri’s guidance.

Beyond its own grounds, the ashram grew into a national hub for organized Hinduism in Italy: it now serves as the headquarters of the Unione Induista Italiana (Italian Hindu Union), the umbrella organization Swami Yogananda Giri himself founded in 1996, which received formal legal recognition from the Italian state by presidential decree in December 2000. The ashram has also received a “Vishisht Sewa Samman” certificate of excellence from the Government of India, and today runs programs spanning yoga, Ayurveda, Sanskrit study, Indian classical dance and music, publishing, and interfaith dialogue alongside its core religious life.

  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's 'Hinduism in Italy' article (which in turn cites Jacobsen & Sardella, 'Hinduism in Italy', 2020) and the ashram's own official 'About us' page (ashramgita.com): confirms the 1984 founding by Swami Yogananda Giri (born Paolo Valle), the Saiva Siddhanta and Srividya traditions followed, the Località Pellegrino, Altare (Savona) location, and its role as headquarters of the Unione Induista Italiana.
  • historical record: Cross-checked against Italian Wikipedia's 'Unione Induista Italiana' article: confirms the Union was founded in 1996 by the same Swami Yogananda Giri and received Italian state legal recognition via presidential decree on 29 December 2000.
  • historical record: Wave 2 follow-up: coordinates added via an OpenStreetMap Nominatim match on the address; note this is a road/locality-level match on 'Localita Pellegrino' rather than a house-number-level point, since no OSM point-of-interest exists yet for the ashram building specifically.
