Mansa Devi is worshipped atop Bilwa Parvat, a hill in the Shivalik range overlooking Haridwar, as a form of Shakti believed in devotional tradition to have arisen directly from the mind (manas) of Shiva, and regarded as a sister of the serpent king Vasuki. The temple is one of three Siddh Peeths clustered around Haridwar — sites believed capable of fulfilling sincere requests — alongside the Chandi Devi and Maya Devi temples, and its inner sanctum is unusual in housing two separate images of the goddess side by side, one shown with eight arms and the other with three heads and five arms.

Pilgrims reach the hilltop either on foot or by the Mansa Devi Udankhatola, a ropeway that also serves Chandi Devi across the valley. A distinctive local custom has devotees tie a thread to one of the trees within the temple grounds while making a wish, returning later to untie it once that wish has been granted. No founding or construction date for the temple is given in the source checked here, so its architectural history remains undocumented in this entry even as its standing as one of Haridwar’s principal Siddh Peeths is well established.

Sources

  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's Mansa Devi Temple, Haridwar article: confirms the temple's location on Bilwa Parvat (part of the Shivalik hills), its status as one of the three principal Siddh Peeths of Haridwar alongside the Chandi Devi and Maya Devi temples, the inner sanctum's two images (one eight-armed, one three-headed and five-armed), and the ropeway connecting the temple to Chandi Devi. The article does not give a founding or construction date for the temple.
  • oral tradition: Mansa Devi is described in devotional tradition as having arisen from the mind (manas) of Shiva and as a sister of the serpent king Vasuki; the custom of tying a thread to the temple's sacred tree to mark a wish and returning to untie it once the wish is fulfilled is a living devotional practice rather than documented history.

For review

  • No founding or construction date for the temple was found in the source checked; its standing as one of Haridwar's Siddh Peeths is well attested, but its architectural history is not established here.
