Location
Open in Google MapsThe Mahalingeswarar Temple at Thiruvidaimarudur, roughly 8 km from Kumbakonam, is among the largest Shiva temple complexes in the Kaveri delta and a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised by all three principal Nayanar saints — Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar — as well as by Manikkavasagar and the later Tamil poet-saint Pattinathar. Shiva is worshipped here as Mahalingeswaraswamy, embodied in a lingam known as the Jyothirmayalingam, alongside his consort, worshipped both as Mookambika and as Devi Bruhatsundarakuchaambika. The oldest surviving masonry is dated to the 9th-century Chola period, with the complex expanded through the 16th-century Nayak era into its present layout of three precincts behind a five-tiered rajagopuram and four gateway towers.
A notable feature of the complex is a separate shrine to the goddess Mookambiga built in a distinct north Indian architectural style, alongside five temple tanks within the grounds. The temple’s principal annual observance is a ten-day Thaipoosam festival in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February).
