Perched on a hillock about 10 km from central Ranchi, this Jagannath Temple was built by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the local king of Barkagarh Jagannathpur, with construction recorded as completed on 25 December 1691. It was modeled directly on the great Jagannath Temple at Puri, reproducing its Kalinga-style tower and layout at a smaller, hilltop scale, and today functions as one of the principal Vaishnava pilgrimage sites in the Ranchi region, drawing tribal and non-tribal devotees alike. Some accounts also describe the temple as having been desecrated during Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s campaigns in the same year construction was completed; this near-simultaneous dating is not fully reconciled in the source available and is noted here with caution rather than presented as settled fact.

The temple has been rebuilt at least once in living memory: it collapsed on 6 August 1990 and was reconstructed by 8 February 1992, restoring it to active use. Its best-known event today is an annual Rath Yatra held during Ashadha (June/July), when a chariot procession and accompanying fair draw large crowds from Ranchi and the surrounding countryside, echoing in miniature the much larger festival at Puri.

  • historical record: Cross-checked against Wikipedia's Jagannath Temple, Ranchi article: confirms construction by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, king of Barkagarh Jagannathpur, with completion dated 25 December 1691; confirms Kalinga-style architecture modeled on the Puri Jagannath Temple at smaller scale; confirms the temple's collapse on 6 August 1990 and reconstruction completed 8 February 1992; confirms the annual Ashadha Rath Yatra and accompanying fair.

For review

  • The source consulted states both that construction was completed in 1691 and, separately, that the temple was 'desecrated and vandalized by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the year 1691' — the same year for both events is an internal inconsistency in the available account that could not be resolved from a single source, so the desecration claim is flagged as uncertain rather than repeated as settled fact.
