Location
Open in Google MapsInaugurated in May 1997 by Shankar Dayal Sharma, then President of India, ISKCON Bangalore stands on Hare Krishna Hill in Rajajinagar and is among the largest Krishna temples in the world, notable for a gold-plated flag post (dhwaja-stambha, 17 m) and a gold-plated spire (kalash shikhara, 8.5 m) over the sanctum. The temple traces its spiritual lineage to A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York in 1966 to spread the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the practice of bhakti yoga. Within the complex, six shrines house Radha-Krishna as the presiding deities alongside Krishna Balarama, Nitai Gauranga, Srinivasa Govinda (a form of Venkateswara), Prahlada Narasimha, and Srila Prabhupada himself.
Beyond its architecture, the temple is known for free distribution of Krishna prasadam to all visitors during darshan hours, and for founding the Akshaya Patra Foundation, a mid-day-meal program for schoolchildren that has grown into one of the world’s largest NGO-run school lunch programs and has received international recognition, including praise from former US President Barack Obama, for its scale and impact. Besides Janmashtami, the temple’s largest annual occasion, it also observes Radhashtami and Gaura Purnima with festive programs that include costume contests, drawing and storytelling competitions, and devotional music for children.
