Under the umbrella of the Hindu Society of Minnesota (HSMN), the Hindu Temple of Minnesota’s community dates back at least to 1979, when the group carried out a first major renovation of its facilities under Arun Shirole’s direction, and installed its first murti — a Ganesha donated by Drs. Kumud and Sashikant Sane — in 1983. The community’s growth culminated in a $9 million construction project completed in June 2006, which expanded the Maple Grove campus to more than 43,000 square feet, with capacity for up to 5,000 worshippers, and added 21 mini-temple shrines built as replicas of well-known temples from across India, making it one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in the United States. Confirmed enshrined deities include Ganesha and Varadaraja, a form of Vishnu; a full deity-by-deity account of all 21 replica shrines was not found in the sources checked for this entry. By the mid-2000s the temple was serving an estimated 40,000-plus Hindus across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, led since 2007 by chief priest Ronur Murali Bhattar and a staff of seven full-time priests.

Kumud and Sashikant Sane); the current complex, over 43,000 square feet with capacity for up to 5,000 people, was completed in June 2006 following a $9 million construction project that added 21 mini-temple replicas of famous temples from across India; it is described as one of the largest Hindu temples in the US and as serving over 40,000 Hindus in the Minneapolis metropolitan area; the site was vandalized during the 2006 construction; chief priest Ronur Murali Bhattar has led a staff of 7 full-time priests since 2007.
  • historical record: Temple website (hindutemplemn.org), accessed during verification: homepage references sponsorship for 'Sri Varadaraja Abhishekam,' confirming Varadaraja (a form of Vishnu) as an enshrined deity; the site describes the complex's 21 mini temples as 'identical replicas of several famous temples from all regions of India' but a full deity-by-deity list for those shrines was not found in the pages checked.

For review

  • The complex includes 21 mini-temple replica shrines built in a 2006 expansion; sources checked confirm Ganesha (installed 1983) and Varadaraja (Vishnu) as enshrined deities, but a complete deity roster for all 21 mini temples could not be confirmed and is not claimed here.
