One of the oldest major Hindu temple complexes in the Midwestern United States, the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago grew out of an organizing effort by South Indian community leaders who incorporated in 1977 to serve the area’s growing Hindu immigrant population. After years of fundraising and planning, the complex’s first building — a Rama temple with subsidiary shrines to Sita, Lakshmana, Ganesha, Hanuman, Venkateswara (Balaji), Mahalakshmi, and Radha-Krishna — was inaugurated on 4 July 1986 on an 18-acre bluff-top site in Lemont, a southwestern suburb of Chicago. A second building on the property was converted in 1994 into a dedicated Ganesha-Shiva-Durga temple, housing additional shrines to Subrahmanya, Parvati, Nataraja, Ayyappa, and the Navagrahas.

Like several large Hindu temples built by first-generation immigrant communities in North America, HTGC’s early history included internal disagreement over how to organize worship across different regional and linguistic traditions; a Telugu-speaking faction split away in the early 1980s to establish a separate Venkateswara temple in nearby Aurora rather than share a single multi-deity complex. Today HTGC’s campus also includes a community center and a Swami Vivekananda Spiritual Center with a bronze statue of the reformer, and the temple remains a major hub for South Indian Hindu worship and cultural life in the Chicago area.

  • historical record: Cross-checked English Wikipedia's 'Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago' article: confirms the organization formed in 1977 among South Indian community leaders, the Rama temple building was inaugurated 4 July 1986, a second building was converted into a Ganesha-Shiva-Durga temple in 1994, the complex sits on 18 acres of bluff land, and a rival Telugu-community faction split off in 1983-84 to found a separate Venkateswara temple in Aurora, Illinois — indicating some internal community history behind the temple's founding.
