Open in Google MapsFounded as a community project in 1986 by Roshanlal Nauhria and a group of Auckland Hindus, Bharatiya Mandir opened in June 1993 as New Zealand’s first purpose-built Hindu temple, following a site blessing by Sant Shri Morari Bapu in 1988 and a Bhoomi Puja land-purification ceremony attended by roughly 600 devotees in 1991. Its architect, Peter Tibbitts, studied existing mandirs in India before designing the building, and the temple has since expanded, acquiring the adjacent Balmoral Community Centre in 2016.
Rather than being dedicated to a single sampradaya, the temple serves New Zealand’s broad and diverse Hindu Indian diaspora as a shared pan-Hindu space, honoring Shiva, Rama, and the Divine Mother (Devi) alongside other deities, and hosting major festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Krishna Janmashtami. It functions as both a place of worship and a wider cultural and library resource for Auckland’s Hindu community, reflecting the temple’s own guiding motto, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (“the world is one family”).
