The Bharatiya Hindu Temple’s roots go back to 1975, when Columbus resident Manu Bhatt began hosting weekly devotional singing at his home; the growing group incorporated as the Vedanta Society of Central Ohio in the early 1980s before organizing as the Bharatiya Temple Society of Central Ohio in 1985 and opening its first temple building on Westerville Road in Columbus that December. After purchasing 22 acres in nearby Powell in 1991, the community built its present temple, an 8,000-square-foot octagonal brick structure designed by Shashi Patel that blends North Indian Nagara and South Indian Dravidian architectural styles around an east-facing gopuram, a yagna altar, and six circular shrine chambers each topped by its own shikhara. The new temple was consecrated and opened to the public on July 9-10, 1994, with shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Durga, Krishna, Shiva, Venkateswara and Rama. With roughly 2,000 member families as of 2010, it is regarded as the largest Hindu temple in the Columbus metropolitan area, and its cultural significance was formally recognized in 2003 when the Ohio Historical Society installed a historical marker at the site.
