A country manor house purchased and donated to ISKCON’s London chapter by former Beatle George Harrison in February 1973, Bhaktivedanta Manor became the UK’s principal Hare Krishna temple; Prabhupada himself visited later that year. The Manor became the center of a prolonged planning dispute in the 1980s-90s after the local council sought to restrict access over traffic from large Janmashtami crowds, moving in 1990 to require the temple’s closure by March 1994; devotees appealed through the UK courts and the European Court of Human Rights, ultimately resolving the dispute in 1996 when a proposed bypass road was approved, allowing festivals to continue.
