Construction began in November 1992, and the Neasden Temple was completed and inaugurated on 20 August 1995 by Pramukh Swami Maharaj; at the time it was the largest Hindu temple outside India. It was built following traditional shilpa shastra methods using roughly 990 cubic meters of Bulgarian limestone and 700 cubic meters of Indian and Italian marble, carved in India by thousands of artisans before shipment to London for assembly without structural steel. It belongs to BAPS (Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha), part of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya (a Vaishnava tradition), and has become a landmark of British Hindu religious life.
