Location
Open in Google MapsAtlanta’s BAPS community traces back to informal gatherings in devotees’ homes during the 1980s, which grew enough by 1988 to convert a former skating rink in nearby Clarkston into a temporary mandir. The current 29-acre site in Lilburn was purchased in February 2000, and after a foundation-stone ceremony in mid-2004, construction of the permanent shikharbaddha mandir ran from September 2005 to August 2007 — built, in the BAPS tradition, from tens of thousands of pieces of marble, limestone, and sandstone hand-carved by artisans and assembled without structural steel. Inaugurated on 26 August 2007 by BAPS spiritual head Pramukh Swami Maharaj, it was the second traditional stone mandir he inaugurated in North America that same year, days after the Toronto mandir’s own consecration, and was described at the time as the largest mandir of its kind outside India. The central shrine enshrines Bhagwan Swaminarayan with Gunatitanand Swami, alongside Radha-Krishna, Sita-Rama, Shiva-Parvati, Hanuman, and Ganapati.
