The Adinathar Temple at Alwarthirunagari, the ancient Thirukkurugur of Pandya Nadu, formally the Sri Adinatha Aazhwar Temple, enshrines the Lord as Adinatha, the Primordial Master, with his consort worshipped as Adinathanayaki, and holds a place of singular eminence among the 108 Divya Desams; within the Nava Tirupathi’s Navagraha associations it is reckoned a Brihaspati (Jupiter) sthalam. The temple’s rajagopuram rises some 95 feet, its mandapas carried on 48 composite pillars noted for their sculptural work. For this is, by hallowed tradition, the birthplace of Nammalwar, the foremost of the twelve Alwars, whose Thiruvaymozhi is revered as the Tamil Veda and whose verses form the very heart of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Nammalwar himself sang the glory of his native shrine, so that Thirukkurugur stands not only as a Divya Desam hymned by an Alwar but as the cradle of the greatest of them. Tradition holds that the infant saint, born here, climbed unaided into a hollow in a tamarind tree associated with the temple and sat in the lotus position, remaining there in silent meditation for sixteen years until discovered by Madhurakavi Alvar; it was in this state, tradition holds, that he composed the four works – Thiruviruttam, Thiruvasiriyam, Periya Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvaymozhi – through which the whole Prabandham finds its summit. The town accordingly bears the name Alwarthirunagari, “the sacred city of the Alwar,” in his honour, and Nammalwar is venerated here in image alongside the Lord. As Adinatha, the Lord is worshipped as the first and original being, fittingly presiding over the place from which the Tamil hymnal tradition itself sprang. Pilgrims on the southern circuit of the Thamiraparani Divya Desams regard Thirukkurugur as the central jewel, returning to honour both the Primordial Lord and the saint who, born in this soil, gave the Srivaishnava world its most cherished songs of surrender and love.

Festivals

Alwarthirunagari, the birthplace of Nammalvar, observes a ten-day Brahmotsavam of Adinathar Perumal in the Tamil month of Chittirai (April-May), with daily processions on garuda and other vahanas amid Veda and Divya Prabandham parayanam. Its most celebrated festival, however, is the Garuda Sevai Utsavam in Vaikasi (May-June), honouring Nammalvar’s birth, when Nammalvar’s procession and the recitation of his Tiruvaymozhi take pride of place and processional deities from across the Nava Tirupathi temples converge here. Margazhi brings Vaikunta Ekadasi with the ten-day Pagal-pathu and Ra-pathu recitations, especially fitting here as the home of the Prabandham’s chief composer. Pavithrotsavam and a float festival (Theppotsavam) are observed where custom maintains them, and the famed image of Nammalvar beneath the tamarind tree is venerated throughout the festival cycle.
