An example: When the pure hearted Nanda gave all the best cows to the brāhamaṇas on the occasion of cerebrating Kṛṣṇa’s birth, the surrounding brāhmaṇas were so satisfied that they exclaimed loudly that it eclipsed the charity of King Nṛga.

When Kṛṣṇa appeared as the son of Nanda Mahārāja, in clear consciousness Nanda Mahārāja desired all auspiciousness for his son and thus began to give valuable cows in charity to all the brāhmaṇas. The brāhmaṇas were so satisfied by this charitable action that they were obliged to say that the charity of Nanda Mahārāja had excelled the charity of such past kings as Mahārāja Pṛthu and Nṛga.

Commentary

The reason that Nanda’s charity eclipsed that of King Nṛga was the purity of Nanda’s heart. He was absorbed only in the appearance of Kṛṣṇa as his son. He did not have the fault of desire for fame and acquisition of enjoyment in this world or the next.
