BG 28.1
Śrī Bādarāyaṇi said: Having worshiped Lord Janārdana and fasted on the Ekādaśī day, Nanda Mahārāja entered the water of the Kālindī on the Dvādaśī to take his bath.
Essence. Nanda, having worshiped Janārdana and fasted on Ekādaśī, enters the Kālindī on Dvādaśī to bathe. Strict vow-keepers move precisely with the calendar — small windows of ritual matter.
BG 28.2
Because Nanda Mahārāja entered the water in the dark of night, disregarding that the time was inauspicious, a demoniac servant of Varuṇa seized him and brought him to his master.
Essence. Entering before dawn at an inauspicious time, Nanda is seized by Varuṇa's demoniac servant. Even a devotee's punctual zeal can land in a tight place when boundary-conditions are crossed. The arrest is not a verdict on his piety.
BG 28.3
O King, not seeing Nanda Mahārāja, the cowherd men loudly cried out, “O Kṛṣṇa! O Rāma!” Lord Kṛṣṇa heard their cries and understood that His father had been captured by Varuṇa. Therefore the almighty Lord, who makes His devotees fearless, went to the court of Varuṇadeva.
Essence. Not seeing Nanda, the cowherds cry out 'Kṛṣṇa! Rāma!' He hears and goes to Varuṇa's court. The Lord answers the friends' cry on the father's behalf — collective petition can move what solo could not.
BG 28.4
Seeing that the Lord, Hṛṣīkeśa, had arrived, the demigod Varuṇa worshiped Him with elaborate offerings. Varuṇa was in a state of great jubilation upon seeing the Lord, and he spoke as follows.
Essence. Seeing Hṛṣīkeśa arrive, Varuṇa worships Him with elaborate offerings, jubilant. Even cosmic administrators treat the Lord's arrival as the achievement of their life — they don't dispute, they offer.
BG 28.5
Śrī Varuṇa said: Now my body has fulfilled its function. Indeed, now the goal of my life is achieved, O Lord. Those who accept Your lotus feet, O Personality of Godhead, can transcend the path of material existence.
Essence. 'Now my body has fulfilled its function; the goal of my life is achieved. Those who accept Your feet transcend material existence.' Real success is being seen by Him; nothing else needs to happen.
BG 28.6
My obeisances unto You, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Soul, within whom there is no trace of the illusory energy, which orchestrates the creation of this world.
Essence. 'Obeisances to You, Absolute Truth, Supreme Soul, in whom there is no trace of the illusory energy that orchestrates this world.' Illusion is real but not in Him — bow to the un-bewildered.
BG 28.7
Your father, who is sitting here, was brought to me by a foolish, ignorant servant of mine who did not understand his proper duty. Therefore, please forgive us.
Essence. 'Your father was brought here by an ignorant servant of mine who did not understand his duty. Forgive us.' Leaders take responsibility for their subordinates' errors and ask forgiveness directly.
BG 28.8
O Kṛṣṇa, O seer of everything, please give Your mercy even to me. O Govinda, You are most affectionate to Your father. Please take him home.
Essence. 'Give Your mercy even to me, O Govinda. You are most affectionate to Your father — take him home.' Varuṇa includes himself in the ask and frames the rescue around Kṛṣṇa's love for His own father.
BG 28.9
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus satisfied by Lord Varuṇa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of lords, took His father and returned home, where their relatives were overjoyed to see them.
Essence. Satisfied with Varuṇa, Kṛṣṇa takes His father and returns home; relatives are overjoyed. Resolution of crisis is followed by simple homecoming — the dramatic encounter ends in a family reunion.
BG 28.10
Nanda Mahārāja had been astonished to see for the first time the great opulence of Varuṇa, the ruler of the ocean planet, and also to see how Varuṇa and his servants had offered such humble respect to Kṛṣṇa. Nanda described all this to his fellow cowherd men.
Essence. Nanda is astonished to have seen Varuṇa's opulence and his humble worship of Kṛṣṇa, and describes it all to the cowherds. Witnessing the Lord honored by higher beings is itself worth recounting in detail.
BG 28.11

BG 28.12
Because He sees everything, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, automatically understood what the cowherd men were conjecturing. Wanting to show His compassion to them by fulfilling their desires, the Lord thought as follows.
Essence. Seeing everything, Kṛṣṇa understands the cowherds' inner conjecture and wants to satisfy their desires by direct revelation. The Lord doesn't wait for questions — He reads the implicit wonder and prepares an answer.
BG 28.13
[Lord Kṛṣṇa thought:] Certainly people in this world are wandering among higher and lower destinations, which they achieve through activities performed according to their desires and without full knowledge. Thus people do not know their real destination.
Essence. Kṛṣṇa thinks: people wander among high and low destinations through desire-driven, half-informed activity, ignorant of their real destination. The disease named — and the cure prepared in the next verse.
BG 28.14
Thus deeply considering the situation, the all-merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead Hari revealed to the cowherd men His abode, which is beyond material darkness.
Essence. All-merciful Hari reveals His abode, beyond material darkness, to the cowherds. Sometimes the right answer to ignorance is not a lecture but a direct showing of the destination.
BG 28.15
Lord Kṛṣṇa revealed the indestructible spiritual effulgence, which is unlimited, conscious and eternal. Sages see that spiritual existence in trance, when their consciousness is free of the modes of material nature.
Essence. Kṛṣṇa reveals the indestructible spiritual effulgence — unlimited, conscious, eternal — that sages see in trance free of the modes. The brahmajyoti shown directly to villagers; the rarest sight given to the simplest hearts.
BG 28.16
The cowherd men were brought by Lord Kṛṣṇa to the Brahma-hrada, made to submerge in the water, and then lifted up. From the same vantage point that Akrūra saw the spiritual world, the cowherd men saw the planet of the Absolute Truth.
Essence. The cowherds are submerged in the Brahma-hrada and lifted out — they see the Lord's planet just as Akrūra had. Spiritual revelation is staged: first impersonal immersion, then personal elevation.
BG 28.17
Nanda Mahārāja and the other cowherd men felt the greatest happiness when they saw that transcendental abode. They were especially amazed to see Kṛṣṇa Himself there, surrounded by the personified Vedas, who were offering Him prayers.
Essence. Nanda and the cowherds feel the greatest happiness seeing the abode and are amazed to find Kṛṣṇa Himself there surrounded by personified Vedas. The same Kṛṣṇa at home in Vṛndāvana and on His supreme planet — proximity is itself ultimate.
