Commentary

“Renouncing for the purpose of Kṛṣṇa” means “renouncing for Kṛṣṇa, to gain His mercy, in order to attain Him.” Hetu is put in the dative case to express that the action is for someone else—relating to a different person, Kṛṣṇa. Hetu is put into the possessive case to express obtaining something for oneself. Thus, “He lives there for the purpose of getting food for himself (annasya hetoḥ vasati).” However, in the present verse, the dative case indicates that the renunciation is for Kṛṣṇa’s sake, for pleasing Him. One can translate the phrase kṛṣṇasya hetave as “renunciation of enjoyment for pleasing Kṛṣṇa, to get His mercy in order to attain Him.” The word ādi in the phrase bhogādi-tyāga means renunciation of enjoyment and desires for sons, wealth, and followers as well.
