BG 7.1

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Now hear, O son of Pṛthā, how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt.

Essence. Hear how, with mind attached to Me, in yoga, taking refuge in Me — you can know Me fully without doubt.

  • Recognize that complete knowledge of Kṛṣṇa requires attachment, yoga, and refuge — together.
  • Don't expect full understanding while keeping Him at arm's length.
  • Move closer with all three.

BG 7.2

I shall now declare unto you in full this knowledge, both phenomenal and numinous. This being known, nothing further shall remain for you to know.

Essence. I shall now declare in full this knowledge, both phenomenal and noumenal — knowing which, nothing further remains to be known.

  • Treat the Gītā's claim seriously — knowledge of Kṛṣṇa is sufficient.
  • Don't endlessly chase additional teachings; deepen the one.
  • Trust the sufficiency.

BG 7.3

Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.

Essence. Out of many thousands, one strives for perfection — and of those who attain, hardly anyone knows Me in truth.

  • Recognize the rarity of authentic spiritual realization.
  • Don't be discouraged by the rarity; be encouraged that it's possible.
  • Apply yourself with the seriousness of one in a thousand.

BG 7.4

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego – all together these eight constitute My separated material energies.

Essence. Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, false ego — these eight are My separated material energies.

  • Recognize the eight elements as separated energy of Kṛṣṇa, not independent.
  • Treat matter with reverence — it is His energy.
  • Don't confuse mind/intelligence/ego with the soul.

BG 7.5

Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.

Essence. Besides this lower nature, there is My superior energy — the living entities — who exploit this material world.

  • Recognize yourself as the superior energy, not the lower.
  • Stop identifying with what is lower.
  • Live as energy of Kṛṣṇa, by Kṛṣṇa, for Kṛṣṇa.

BG 7.6

All created beings have their source in these two natures. Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both the origin and the dissolution.

Essence. All beings come from these two natures — I am the origin of all and the dissolution.

  • Hold the cosmic perspective: Kṛṣṇa is origin and dissolution.
  • Practice surrender of small worries to the cosmic frame.
  • Recognize that He encompasses what bewilders us.

BG 7.7

O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

Essence. There is no truth superior to Me — everything rests on Me, like pearls on a thread.

  • Identify what you treat as 'higher' than Kṛṣṇa and re-order.
  • See diverse phenomena as pearls strung on the one thread.
  • Look for Him as the unifier behind apparent diversity.

BG 7.8

O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oṁ in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.

Essence. I am the taste of water, the light of sun and moon, the syllable Om in the Vedas, the sound in ether, the ability in man.

  • Notice Kṛṣṇa in ordinary sensations: taste, light, sound, ability.
  • Make daily sense-experience a recognition of Him.
  • Use this verse as portable contemplation.

BG 7.9

I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

Essence. I am the original fragrance of the earth, the heat in fire, the life in all that lives, the austerity of ascetics.

  • Smell, warm yourself, breathe — and know Him as that quality.
  • Don't treat sense experience as profane; it is shot through with Him.
  • Use perception itself as remembrance.

BG 7.10

O son of Pṛthā, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.

Essence. I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, the prowess of the powerful.

  • Trace your intelligence and capabilities back to Him.
  • Don't claim authorship of capacities you didn't manufacture.
  • Honor the source by using the gift in His service.

BG 7.11

I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhāratas [Arjuna].

Essence. I am the strength of the strong, free from passion and desire — and I am desire itself when not contrary to dharma.

  • Distinguish dharma-aligned desire (Kṛṣṇa Himself) from contrary desire.
  • Don't suppress all desire indiscriminately.
  • Cultivate the desire that is Him.

BG 7.12

Know that all states of being – be they of goodness, passion or ignorance – are manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent. I am not under the modes of material nature, for they, on the contrary, are within Me.

Essence. All states of existence — sattva, rajas, tamas — are manifested by My energy; they are in Me, but I am not in them.

  • Don't identify Kṛṣṇa with the modes; the modes are His emanation, not His person.
  • Use this distinction when philosophizing about God.
  • Refuse pantheism that flattens the personal Lord into the impersonal.

BG 7.13

Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance], the whole world does not know Me, who am above the modes and inexhaustible.

Essence. Deluded by these three modes, the world does not know Me — who am above the modes and inexhaustible.

  • Recognize delusion as the obstacle, not Kṛṣṇa's hiddenness.
  • Address the delusion (mode-identification) and Kṛṣṇa becomes evident.
  • Don't blame Kṛṣṇa for hiding.

BG 7.14

This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.

Essence. This divine māyā, made of three modes, is hard to overcome — but those who surrender unto Me can easily cross.

  • Don't attempt to defeat māyā by your own effort.
  • Surrender as the means.
  • Trust the 'easily' — surrender genuinely simplifies.

BG 7.15

Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.

Essence. Four kinds of impious people do not surrender to Me: the grossly foolish, the lowest of mankind, the deluded, the demoniac.

  • Honestly check whether any of the four shadows your tendencies.
  • Don't disqualify yourself, but don't excuse the shadow either.
  • Address the shadow with discipline.

BG 7.16

O best among the Bhāratas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me – the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

Essence. Four kinds of pious people surrender to Me: the distressed, the desirers of wealth, the inquisitive, the seekers of the Absolute.

  • Recognize that even imperfect motives bring people to Kṛṣṇa.
  • Don't disqualify yourself based on motivation.
  • Use whatever brings you, then let the motivation refine.

BG 7.17

Of these, the one who is in full knowledge and who is always engaged in pure devotional service is the best. For I am very dear to him, and he is dear to Me.

Essence. Of these, the one in knowledge, always engaged in My exclusive devotional service, is the best — for I am very dear to him, and he is dear to Me.

  • Aim for knowledge-grounded exclusive devotion.
  • Cultivate the mutual dearness — His to you, yours to Him.
  • Don't settle for transactional motivation.

BG 7.18

All these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal.

Essence. All these are noble, but I consider the one in knowledge to be My very Self — fixed in Me, he attains the supreme destination.

  • Recognize the dignity of the knowledge-grounded devotee.
  • Cultivate fixed-in-Me consciousness.
  • Trust that this fixity is itself the destination.

BG 7.19

After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.

Essence. After many births, the wise person surrenders unto Me — knowing Vāsudeva is everything; such a soul is very rare.

  • Recognize the multi-life arc of full surrender.
  • Honor the rarity without despair.
  • Take 'Vāsudeva is everything' as the operating premise.

BG 7.20

Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.

Essence. Those whose intelligence is stolen by various desires worship demigods, following rituals according to their natures.

  • Notice when various desires steal your intelligence.
  • Recognize secondary worship as desire-driven, not ultimate.
  • Refuse to bargain with secondary deities for primary needs.

BG 7.21

I am in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul. As soon as one desires to worship some demigod, I make his faith steady so that he can devote himself to that particular deity.

Essence. Whatever form a devotee wishes to worship with faith, I make that faith steady — he obtains his desire, but ultimately from Me.

  • Recognize that even partial worship is supported by Kṛṣṇa.
  • Don't disrespect partial seekers; their faith is being held by Him.
  • Acknowledge His secret hand in all forms of sincere worship.

BG 7.22

Endowed with such a faith, he endeavors to worship a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.

Essence. Endowed with such faith, he worships and gets what he desires — but it is actually I who arrange those benefits.

  • Recognize that all benefits, even from secondary sources, flow through Kṛṣṇa.
  • Direct your gratitude to the actual source.
  • Stop fragmenting thanks among secondary deities.

BG 7.23

Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.

Essence. Those who worship the demigods go to the demigods; those who worship Me come to Me — the result corresponds to the object.

  • Choose your object of worship carefully — you will go where you worship.
  • Recognize that not all destinations are equal.
  • Aim for Kṛṣṇa, not demigod realms.

BG 7.24

Unintelligent men, who do not know Me perfectly, think that I, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, was impersonal before and have now assumed this personality. Due to their small knowledge, they do not know My higher nature, which is imperishable and supreme.

Essence. The unintelligent think Me unmanifest before, now manifest as a person — they do not know My superior, eternal personality.

  • Reject impersonalism that says Kṛṣṇa is 'really' formless.
  • Honor His eternal personal form as the reality.
  • Don't reduce Him to a metaphor for the impersonal.

BG 7.25

I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them I am covered by My internal potency, and therefore they do not know that I am unborn and infallible.

Essence. I am never manifest to the foolish; covered by My internal potency, I am unrecognized by the bewildered.

  • Don't expect Kṛṣṇa to perform for you to validate your faith.
  • Recognize bewilderment as the issue.
  • Pray for clearing of bewilderment, not for proofs.

BG 7.26

O Arjuna, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, I know everything that has happened in the past, all that is happening in the present, and all things that are yet to come. I also know all living entities; but Me no one knows.

Essence. I know everything that has happened, is happening, will happen — and I know all beings; but no one knows Me fully.

  • Trust His complete knowledge of you.
  • Stop pretending you can fully know Him; humility is the right posture.
  • Live before His seeing as a settled truth.

BG 7.27

O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of the foe, all living entities are born into delusion, bewildered by dualities arisen from desire and hate.

Essence. All embodied beings are bewildered from birth by the duality of desire and aversion.

  • Recognize universal bewilderment — you're not uniquely afflicted.
  • Address the duality, not the symptoms.
  • Use scripture to cut through the dual-current.

BG 7.28

Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.

Essence. Those who have ended their previous sins, fixed in pious activities, free from duality — engage in Me with determination.

  • Recognize that determination in Kṛṣṇa requires prior cleansing.
  • Don't expect smooth devotion while sinful patterns continue.
  • Address sins concurrently with cultivating devotion.

BG 7.29

Intelligent persons who are endeavoring for liberation from old age and death take refuge in Me in devotional service. They are actually Brahman because they entirely know everything about transcendental activities.

Essence. Those who strive for liberation from old age and death take refuge in Me — they understand Brahman, the spiritual self, and karma in full.

  • Recognize liberation as the goal worth striving for.
  • Use Kṛṣṇa as the means.
  • Cultivate full understanding of Brahman + self + karma.

BG 7.30

Those in full consciousness of Me, who know Me, the Supreme Lord, to be the governing principle of the material manifestation, of the demigods, and of all methods of sacrifice, can understand and know Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even at the time of death.

Essence. Those who know Me as the lord of cosmic manifestation, of the demigods, and of sacrifice — even at the time of death, with steady mind, they know Me.

  • Cultivate steady mind aimed toward Kṛṣṇa now, before death tests it.
  • Use this life to prepare for that final moment.
  • Treat each evening's lying down as practice for the final lying down.
